Job summary

City of Monroe, North Carolina is seeking an employee to operate a variety of medium to heavy automotive and construction equipment, with duties including general maintenance and assisting with events. Work is under moderate supervision and may involve other groundskeeping tasks.

Required is a High School Diploma or GED and a valid North Carolina CDL or ability to obtain within six months. A pesticide applicator license may be required depending on assignment.

Job description

Performs intermediate work operating a variety of medium to heavy automotive and construction equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over assigned personnel.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Operating lawnmower, bush hog, backhoe, tractors, loaders, mini excavator, dump truck, leaf truck, skid steer, and related motorized equipment; performing general maintenance work.

Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment such as lawnmower, bush hog, backhoe, tractors, loaders, mini excavator, dump truck, leaf truck, skid steer, mini excavator, and related motorized equipment.

Operates backhoe to dig ditches and culverts and loads sand, rocks, etc.

Operates landscaping equipment and performs a variety of grounds keeping tasks; maintains parks ball fields and other landscaped areas; edges sidewalks, borders, and plant beds; trims weeds and grass; applies pesticides if qualified; cleans and maintains greenways.

Assists with special events and holiday decoration set-up and removal.

Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, around other ground utilities, and in other tight places requiring care and skill.

Performs minor repairs and maintenance to assigned equipment.

Cleans and washes equipment on a periodic basis and performs routine maintenance.

Reports any unsafe conditions of equipment and other necessary repairs to supervisor and/or mechanic.

Assists athletic fields specialist as required.

Assists with trash removal and maintenance of Highway 74 medians.

Assists with snow removal and ice control.

Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma/ GED and minimal experience in the performance of heavy manual work and operating motorized equipment.

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina or the ability to obtain within six months (6) of employment.

May require possession of or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license depending on departmental assignment.
