Job description

St. James Parish Government is hiring for Equipment Operator Iin the Road, Bridge & Drainage Division under the Operations Department.

JOB FUNCTION:Drives or operates gasoline or diesel-powered light equipment such as trucks,tractors, side-arm/boom mower tractors, bush-hogs, or other equipment tomaintain parish property, servitude, rights-of-way; and to repair roads andother facilities. The distinction between a Laborer II and this positionconcerns the use of more complicated equipment. This position is classified asessential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This is a nonexemptposition, forty hours per week. This positionis “Safety Sensitive” and subject to random drug testing as per the St. JamesParish Government Employee Handbook. Individuals in this class can complete themajority of their projects/assignments with a minimum amount of supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes anycombination of the following illustrative examples of duties andresponsibilities including but not limited to:

• Performs routine inspection andmaintenance to equipment such as checking fuel, oil, and other lubricant levelsand sharpening blades; observes indicators to check for proper function ofmachinery and stops operation when indicated; reports mechanical problems forrepair
• Maintains logs for mileage, fuelconsumption, materials transported in accordance with local, state, and federalregulations
• Performs a variety of manual tasksincluding but not limited to; loading, unloading truck by hand or mechanicalloader; securing cargo for transit; removing trees, roots, stumps; cuttinggrass, weeds, and brush using hand tools and small equipment; patches/repairsasphalt, concrete, and gravel roads
• Drives or operates small dump trucks,motor patrol, tractors, side-arm/boom mowers, bush-hogs or related grasscutting equipment, to maintain parish property, servitude, and rights-of-way
• Maintains equipment by washing andcleaning
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diplomaor general education diploma (GED) and 1 year experience and/or training.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using wholenumbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define common sense understandingto carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Abilityto deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardizedsituations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess avalid Louisiana Driver’s License (class “E”) and have an acceptable drivingrecord.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the operating proceduresand maintenance of equipment operated
• General knowledge of the hazards andapplicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation
