Job description

Position Summary: The Gas Equipment Operator is a multi-level skill position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of natural gas distribution infrastructure. Accordingly, this position will work with various types of mechanized equipment. The position may also be required to travel to various work locations based on Pike clients’ needs and deliver optimum customer service.

Essential Functions:

  1. Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair functions.
  2. Contributes to the installation of natural gas infrastructure and appurtenances.
  3. Frequently excavates around live gas pipelines and other utilities requiring skill and care to protect life and property.
  4. Maintains company vehicles, performs daily safety, maintenance, or servicing checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment.
  5. Keep equipment and tools in good working order.
  6. Knowledge and experience to apply OSHA competent person standards.
  7. Testing and classifying soils.
  8. Sloping and shoring standards.
  9. Working knowledge of rigging and material handling practices.
  10. Must have the ability to work on a team.
  11. Must possess operator qualification(s) to perform covered tasks as needed.
  12. Does all other related work as required to complete the job.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Must possess or obtain a commercial driver’s license within 60 days.
  2. Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  3. Understands how to safely operate equipment.
  4. Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  5. Capable of receiving and following directions.
  6. Capable of learning basic knowledge of materials used.
  7. Understands the basic concepts of equipment set up.
  8. Understands when to wear personal protective equipment.
  9. Able to identify different types of materials used.
  10. Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  11. Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  12. Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  13. Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  14. Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  15. Willing to work overtime when requested.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to dirt, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical equipment, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The employee may be subject to one or more of the following atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system from fumes, odors, dust, mists, or gases. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
