Job summary
The City of Myrtle Beach is seeking an Equipment Operator to maintain and repair city grounds, streets, sewers, and related infrastructure. The role requires operating light to medium equipment, performing inspections, and following strict safety protocols.
Responsibilities include landscaping duties, special event support, and routine maintenance. Applicants must possess a high school diploma and a valid driver’s license. This is a full-time, on-site position with benefits.
Qualifications
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; no experience required though some experience in equipment operations desired.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
- Ability to operate and maintain a variety of light to medium equipment.
- Knowledge of safety practices and ability to follow procedures.

The purpose of this positionis to perform semi-skilled work functions to operate motorized light to medium weight equipment to maintain and repair City grounds, sewers, stormwater conveyance systems, streets, and to provide solid waste collection services.
- Operates equipment in one of the following areas: golf course, solid waste, water/sewer, parks, stormwater, and streets.
- Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
- Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, and parks; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
- Conducts pre and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage, and other associated documentation.
- Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
- Performs or assists in performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping duties; repairs sidewalks and curbs; mows grass; cleans storm drains and ditches; patches potholes, shovels stone on roadsides; seals cracks in streets, tars and chips streets; repairs and replaces street signs, etc.
- Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
- Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
- Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions, or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of City vehicles.
- Prunes trees and bushes; mows rights-of way, medians, and parks with a Z-Turn Mower.
- Plants Flowers & Shrubs as directed.
- Helps Loading/Unloading Trailers with plants and hanging baskets.
- Pulls weeds and sprays chemicals.
- Picks up trash. Change Trash Liners in Trashcans.
- Installs and maintains irrigation systems.
- Installs and maintains playground equipment.
- Placing and removing barriers for Special Events
- Placing and removing Hydros for Special Events
- Must be available to work additional hours for Special Events
- Prunes trees and bushes; mows rights-of way, medians, and parks.
- Pulls weeds and sprays chemicals.
- Picks up trash.
- Installs and maintains irrigation systems.
- Installs and maintains playground equipment.
- Drives garbage truck on assigned route; picks up yard waste, garbage, and recycling and puts in truck.
- Ensures cleanliness of yard area.
- Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas.
- Repairs stormwater pipes and catch basins.
- Builds and installs stormwater catch basins.
- Grades ditches and installs stormwater pipes.
- Assist in removing, forming, and pouring concrete sidewalks.
- Assist in patching asphalt roadways.
- Operates grinder and vacuum to remove trip hazards from concrete sidewalks.
- Repairs leak and/or install water and sewer lines.
- Performs plumbing work.
- May be required to obtain a class “D” Water Distribution License.
- Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.
- Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.

The work is heavy work. The employee is constantly required to move objects applying up to 20 pounds of force; frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects; and occasionally required to exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects.… Additionally requires:balancing, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing voices, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, speaking, stooping, visual acuity in data/operating equipment, and walking.
Work is performed outdoors where performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents. Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.
