THE POSITION

Are you interested in a hands-on role that keeps Fort Indiantown Gap running smoothly? As an Equipment Operator B for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, you will help maintain roads, grounds, and essential facilities. This position offers the chance to use your skills with both light and heavy equipment to support a busy and dynamic military installation. Your work will help ensure safe conditions for the workforce, visitors, and the surrounding community.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on skilled operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment to support roads, grounds, utilities, and facilities across Fort Indiantown Gap. As an Equipment Operator B, you will perform the following duties:

• Construction Reading: Read and interpret plans, blueprints, standards, specifications, and basic construction math
• Airfield Coordination: Follow proper radio procedures and work safely near active aircraft at airfields and landing zones
• Range Communication: Use correct safety protocols to access firing ranges and complete repairs or maintenance
• Excavation Practices: Apply safe excavation techniques, assess soil conditions, and use proper trenching or sloping methods
• Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain various heavy and light equipment, including loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, and snow removal machinery
• Tool Use: Select and use hand and power tools safely, including chainsaws, jackhammers, tampers, shovels, and rakes

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience or training.

Special Requirement

• This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

Additional Requirements

• A conditional offer is contingent on passing a favorable National Crime Information Center (NCIC) screening for admittance to Fort Indiantown Gap.
• You must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit at the time of hire. Once you are hired, the agency will send you to classes for a Class A CDL that you must obtain within six months after hire.
• You must obtain a Tanker Endorsement (N) within one year of employment.
• You must obtain a Bio-Solid Application certification within one year of employment.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required)

• Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions
• Experience operating a refuse or recycling truck
• Experience operating a wheeled or tract front-end loader
• Experience operating heavy trucks or tractor trailers
• Experience performing snow removal
• Experience cutting grass using a large tractor equipped with a gang-mower attachment
