Job Description: Equipment Operator - Asphalt

Team Elmer's seeks to fill a full-time seasonal opening for an Equipment Operator. This position will operate several pieces of equipment including, but not limited to, a roller, screed, and paver.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Roller Operator

Operate self-propelled steel-wheeled, rubber-tired, vibrator, segmented, or other types of rollers to compact earth, subgrade, sub-base, and asphalt surfaces for highways, streets, and runways. Tasks include distributing, breaking down, compressing, and finishing asphalt surfaces, as well as compacting earth fills and sub-grades.

• Drive machine in successive overlapping passes to compact surfaces.
• Adjust speed and direction based on material compressibility and temperature.
• Use hand tamp or portable power rollers for areas inaccessible to larger rollers.

Screed Operator

Operate controls on the free-floating screed attached to the paver to manage asphalt flow and ensure proper grade and consistency.

• Regulate material flow and signal the paving machine to start/stop.
• Ensure uniform distribution and verify depth specifications using gauges.

Paver Operator

Operate paving machines to spread and level hot mix asphalt on subgrades, maintaining correct grade and thickness with the aid of stakes and level gauges.

• Preheat the screed before asphalt placement.
• Maintain constant asphalt flow into the hopper and control screed direction to eliminate voids.
• Adjust screed width and perform paver maintenance; maintain CDL license for hauling.

Mill Operator

Operate milling machines to remove and grind road surfaces, ensuring proper loading, operation time, and fineness.

• Load the mill and operate for the required duration.

The above duties are not exhaustive; additional tasks may be assigned within the scope of the role.

Qualifications:

• Valid CDL A or B license; if not, must obtain within 1 year of hire.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Clean driving record for the past 5 years.
• Ability to pass pre-employment physical and drug screening.
• Knowledge of equipment, machines, tools, and construction materials and methods.
• Experience as a prep crew laborer or similar role preferred.
• Ability to handle power tools, operate heavy equipment, and perform manual tasks such as raking and shoveling.
• Willingness to learn and perform team roles.
• Ability to work long hours, perform repetitive lifting (40+ pounds), and work in various environmental conditions.
• Good work ethic, punctuality, and adherence to safety rules (DOT, OSHA, MiOSHA).
