Job summary

The West Virginia Department of Transportation in Pendleton County is seeking a Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator to operate trucks and maintain roadways. Placed directly into a structured Apprenticeship Program, you will receive paid, hands-on training to sharpen your skills and advance your career.

You will support SRIC operations and perform essential maintenance tasks under varying weather and shift conditions.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods in building maintenance trades.
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to diagnose basic mechanical problems and follow repair procedures.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair orders).
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to train and work with others.

Responsibilities

• Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem‑axle trucks.
• Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
• Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
• Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
• Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
• Perform minor mechanical repairs in the field (tires, blades, filters).
• Repair and construct culverts.
• Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
• Clean equipment and workshop.
• Transport fuel to equipment.
• Some positions may require certifications after employment.
• Travel may be required; a valid driver’s license is required.
• In assignment area, CDL Class A or B required.
