Progression through the apprenticeship program offers path‑to‑higher‑tier pay based on completed hours, job proficiency, specialized training and proficiency in maintenance of roadways and equipment. You will play a vital role in keeping Pendleton County moving safely year‑round.
As a Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator for Pendleton County, you may operate single and tandem‑axle trucks, front‑end loaders, skid steers, mowers, and snowplows to perform roadway maintenance and repairs. In addition to operating machinery, your role encompasses essential hands‑on maintenance, such as asphalt patching, ditching, mowing, setting up traffic control barricades, and flagging. This work will involve a great degree of strenuous activity, working in extreme weather conditions and could require the ability to lift up to 75 pounds or more. Candidates must also be available for emergency call‑outs and willing to work 12 hour days or night shifts during seasonal Snow Removal and Ice Control (SRIC) operations. Candidates will perform related work as required.
- The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
- In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
- Tier 1 hourly rate: $18.3938
- Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem‑axle trucks.
- Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
- Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
- Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
- Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
- Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
- Repair and construct various culvert types.
- Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
- Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
- Clean equipment and workshop.
- Transport fuel to equipment.
- Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.

- Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

EXPERIENCE:
