General Purpose

Perform advanced, journey-level skilled tasks in operating and servicing equipment needed to construct, maintain, or repair county landfill sites.

Supervision Received

Work under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor.

Essential Functions

• Operate compacters, crawlers, loaders, scrapers, dozers, belly dump trailers, or related heavy equipment used in waste movement, covering, and compacting.
• Check and service equipment; perform routine maintenance and repairs; ensure cleanliness and organization of equipment interiors; report mechanical issues.
• Adhere to safety policies and regulations.
• Act as a waste screener; monitor waste for containments and hazardous materials.
• Monitor public activities; operate communication devices to alert equipment operators of suspicious activity.
• Address public concerns and inform about landfill requirements and fees.
• Assist with construction and maintenance projects within the landfill, including tasks like grading, drainage, and installing liners.
• Operate equipment for stockpiling materials used in construction and maintenance.
• Maintain reliable attendance and work patterns.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Five (5) years of experience in operation and maintenance of medium and heavy equipment

OR

• Equivalent combination of education and experience

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operation principles and safety standards
• Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and basic landfill engineering
• Advanced skill in operating heavy equipment
• Ability to operate various equipment, perform strenuous labor, follow instructions, and establish effective relationships

3. Special Qualifications:

• Current Idaho Driver's License
• Possibility of needing an Idaho Commercial Driver's License
• Annual Hazardous Waste Recognition Course completion

4. Work Environment:

• Physical activities including walking, standing, stooping, climbing, and operating equipment
• Exposure to outdoor conditions, odors, dust, and weather extremes
• Ability to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
