The Underground Operator plays a vital role in supporting underground utility crews by assisting with excavation, utility installation and repair, site preparation, and maintaining a safe and efficient job site environment. This position is essential to ensuring projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with company and safety standards.

Position Summary

The Underground Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and skilled operation of heavy construction and material handling equipment. This role supports project teams in executing earthwork, material placement, and site preparation. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, precision, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate assigned equipment safely and in compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and site‑specific safety plans
  • Perform pre‑shift and post‑shift equipment inspections; document and report deficiencies
  • Execute excavation, grading, loading, lifting, and material transport tasks as directed
  • Position and maneuver equipment in confined or congested work areas with precision
  • Communicate effectively with ground crew, crew leaders, and team leader
  • Assist with minor maintenance and lubrication of equipment as needed
  • Follow all traffic control plans and site access procedures
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to bend, squat, crouch, reach and lift 50+ pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform manual labor for extended periods
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain
  • May be required to work in confined spaces and/or near heavy equipment and at heights
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required, including hats, gloves, and safety vests
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of verifiable experience operating excavators, skid steers, telehandlers, forklifts, or dump trucks
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL A)
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and work orders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe rigging, lifting, and load handling practices
  • Strong situational awareness and spatial judgment

  • Assists laborers and crew members with excavation, utility repairs, site preparation, and cleanup.

  • Represents Hydromax Services professionally on all job sites.
Requirements
  • Minimum 2 years of verifiable experience operating excavators, skid steers, telehandlers, forklifts, or dump trucks
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Current forklift/equipment certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and work orders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe rigging, lifting, and load handling practices
  • Strong situational awareness and spatial judgment
