Job summary

Metropolitan Airports Commission in Minneapolis seeks an Equipment Mechanic Specialist to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair a wide range of fleet equipment used across airport operations. This role supports airfield, landside, public safety, and maintenance departments to keep vehicles safe, reliable, and compliant.

The position is represented by IUOE Local 49. The starting rate is $41.587/hour, with additional shifts and benefits like HCSP contributions and PERA pension.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree or vocational program in automotive/diesel with 2 years experience, or 5 years in the field.
• Experience with gasoline and diesel engines and ECMs.
• Ability to read hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical schematics.
• Complete set of hand tools by the time of employment.
• Ability to pass background check and physical examination.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, service, maintain and repair a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and emergency repairs as needed.
• Document repairs, parts, labor and vehicle numbers in FMIS.
• Train coworkers on safe and proper use of equipment.
• Operate vehicles/equipment to ensure safe operation.

Equipment Mechanic Specialists perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of fleet equipment used across airport operations, including, but not limited to: heavy trucks, front-end loaders, air compressors, industrial and row crop tractors, snow plows, snow blowers, sanders, sweepers, mowers, police cars, firefighting and crash-rescue equipment, and miscellaneous airport equipment. This role supports airfield, landside, public safety, and maintenance departments by ensuring all vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations. This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 49.

Compensation and Pay Differentials/Incentives

• Starting rate of pay: $41.587/hour
  • +$0.40/hour for Class A CDL
  • +$2.00/hour - 3rd Shift (Night)
• $195/month employer contribution to the employee's Health Care Savings Plan (HCSP) account
• Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) pension - Coordinated Plan
• In addition to competitive hourly wages, workers can also earn overtime

• Employer provided uniforms
• $300/year for boots/safety apparel (increases to $325/year in February 2027)
• Reimbursement for new/replacement tools up to $500/year (prorated based on start date and after successful completion of probationary period)

Current Shifts*

• Day – Monday - Friday – 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
• Night – Sunday - Thursday – 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.

* Shift assignments are bid twice each calendar year, based on seniority.

Job Duties

• Inspect, diagnose, service, maintain, and repair a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment including lawn and grounds equipment, light-duty pickups and sedans, police vehicles, hybrid/electric class vehicles, fire apparatus, off-road construction equipment, and Class 8 diesel trucks.
• Inspect, diagnose, service, maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, sweepers, snow removal equipment, related attachments, and specialized airfield maintenance machinery.
• Inspect, adjust, install, repair, and/or remove and replace parts and equipment, including gas and diesel engines and lubricating, cooling, fuel, exhaust, and hydraulic systems.
• Remove and overhaul chassis units, including but not limited to brake systems, transmissions, differentials, and front and rear axles.
• Repair and replace brakes, steering, and suspension systems, brake drums and rotors, springs, and other parts as necessary on electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic braking and steering systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues using diagnostic tools, scan software, and technical manuals.
• Perform setup of new vehicles and equipment including modifications as assigned to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity.
• Utilize tools and equipment safely and efficiently, including but not limited to: common hand tools, impact wrenches, air and hydraulic tools, brake drum lathes, timing lights, drill presses, and acetylene torch and arc welding equipment.
• Perform emergency field repairs to vehicles and equipment as needed.
• Drive and operate vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation and functionality.
• Document and record all repairs, preventative maintenance, parts, labor, vehicle numbers or other required information related to the repair or maintenance of vehicles and equipment in the applicable FMIS software and in accordance with department policies.
• Complete training as assigned to ensure skills and certifications remain up to date and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Assist other Fleet Services personnel with related job functions.
• Train co-workers on the safe and proper use of equipment.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Education Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid state-issued driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

• Completion of a two-year degree or vocational technical program in automotive, diesel, fleet mechanic/technician, heavy equipment mechanics or a related field and two years of experience performing skilled mechanical maintenance work on gasoline and diesel engines OR five years of experience performing skilled mechanical maintenance work on gasoline and diesel engines.
• Experience performing maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines, electronic control modules (ECM) and related sensors, and diesel and gas fuel injection systems.
• Experience using diagnostic equipment such as digital volt-ohm meters, voltage amperage testers, pressure testing equipment, breakout boxes and scanning tools.
• Ability to read hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical schematic drawings.
• Possess a complete set of hand tools for automotive and heavy equipment repair by the time of employment.
• Ability to work under varying weather conditions for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and position up to 50 lbs. and perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to climb in/out of equipment.
• Ability to pass a criminal history and employment background check.
• Ability to pass a physical examination.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience as a fleet mechanic or heavy equipment technician, preferably in a municipal, public works, or airport environment.
• Training, troubleshooting, or repair experience on open and closed center hydraulic systems and hydrostatic units.
• Additional certificates in factory-provided automotive and heavy equipment repair.
• Experience and/or training maintaining and repairing EV vehicles.
• Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License.
• Aviation related experience or certification(s).
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s).
