The Fleet Services division within Hennepin County's Transportation Operations department is looking for an energetic, highly motivated, and team-oriented Journeyman Fleet Mechanic to join its team. This position will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and performing diagnostics on a variety of equipment. This includes hybrid, electric, gas cars and pickups, emergency vehicles and medium and heavy-duty gas or diesel trucks as well as construction equipment including loaders, graders and skid steers, trailers, small engines, and powersport equipment.

Location and hours:This position is located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. This is a second shift position, with work hours being 2 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. This position requires candidates to be available for on call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In addition to the base wage, there is a $.50/hour for a class A driver's license, $2.80/hour for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master's in automotive or heavy truck, and $1.10 for the night shift differential pay.
In this position, you will:- Perform detailed preventive maintenance to complex systems by following manuals, established maintenance schedules, and procedures on small equipment, attachments, vehicles, and light duty trucks.
- Perform failure diagnosis and repairs to complex systems using, diagnostic equipment and procedures on medium duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Perform emergency and planned field repairs.
- Perform pre-delivery and setup of new vehicles.
- Document and record all repairs using the fleet management information system.
- Perform mandatory regulated inspections, tests and operations to ensure safe and proper operation on all County vehicles, trucks and equipment.
- Use diagnostic scan tools related to light and heavy vehicles. For example, Snap-on Zeus, Mack/Volvo Tech-tool, Daimler DTNA/Diagnostic link 8, or International Navistar Engine Diagnostics (NED).
Need to have:- One of the following:
- Completion of an approved two-year program in auto or truck mechanics from an accredited technical school andthree years or more of experience in repairing and servicing automotive equipment and/or heavy truck.
- Five or more years of experience in repairing and servicing automotive equipment and/or truck.
- Possession of four or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in either truck or automotive repair or the ability to obtain certifications withinsix months of employment.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit anda valid Class B driver's license within six months of employment.
- Ability to:
- Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Supply own full complement of mechanic tools.
Nice to have:- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements.
- Experience:
- Using electronic testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Servicing light and medium duty trucks, class 7 or 8 trucks, light and heavy-duty construction equipment, small engine equipment, snowmobiles, boats, and other recreational equipment.
- Using wire feed welders, stick welders, and acetylene torches.
- Servicing hydraulic systems.
- Using fleet maintenance software.
- Using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Express, Excel, Teams and Word) and/or comparable programs.

- Core services:
- Maintenance and repair of 1,200 county vehicles and equipment.
- Providing vehicles and equipment for customers including those with only occasional needs through our fleet motor pool available throughout various Hennepin County facilities.
- Asset management, budgeting, and reporting; this includes vehicle and equipment replacement, scheduling, forecasting and specific analytics such as fuel usage, vehicle location, driving habits, etc.
- Fuel management, fuel system management, consumables tracking and reporting.
- Specification development for procurement of vehicles and equipment with customer involvement to provide the most cost effective, reliable, and sustainable vehicle and/or equipment for their operations.
