Job summary

The City of Mesquite is hiring Equipment Mechanics I–III to maintain and repair a range of heavy and light equipment. Work includes diagnostics, electrical and A/C repairs, inspections, and field service as needed.

You must furnish your own hand tools and be able to work on second shift. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and 3 years of maintenance experience or 18 months of automotive/truck trade training; a Class A CDL is required within 6 months; TDPS emissions

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; up to 18 months vocational training in automotive/Med/Heavy Truck maintenance.
  • Three years of automotive/truck/equipment maintenance experience or 18 months trade school completion.
  • Valid driver’s license; obtain Class A CDL within 6 months; TDPS/Emissions Certification within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor overhauls, front-end alignments, and minor repairs; rebuild minor components.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and manuals to diagnose vehicles.
  • Repair electrical and AC systems; perform vehicle inspections and test drives.
  • Prepare vehicles for service and track repair times and parts in the fleet system.
  • Maintain shop equipment and tools; perform housekeeping duties.

SUPERVISION

General supervision is provided by the Equipment Services Senior Supervisor during the day or Equipment Services Shift Supervisor at night.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Performs minor overhauls, front-end alignments, and minor vehicle component repairs and maintenance. Rebuilds minor vehicle components.
  • Uses diagnostic equipment and equipment manuals to correctly diagnose vehicles.
  • Repairs electrical and air conditioning systems.
  • Performs State of Texas vehicle inspections.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems on vehicular equipment. Prepares new vehicles and equipment to be placed into service.
  • Keeps track of repair times, materials and records in the FASTER fleet management System.
  • Performs road test on vehicles and equipment for safe and proper operation prior to returning to service.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and shop tools. Performs housekeeping duties.
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responds to service calls as needed; makes repairs in the field when possible; and tows vehicles when necessary.
  • Assists other technicians in performing repairs.
  • May modify, fabricate and install special equipment.
  • Researches and stays current on new technologies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Technical Training: May require completion of up to 18 months of vocational education/training in automotive, Med/Heavy Truck maintenance or repair at an accredited trade school.

EXPERIENCE

Three years of automotive/truck/equipment maintenance and repair experience, or graduation from an accredited automotive/truck trade school of at-least 18 months.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid driver's license and obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within 6 Months of employment start date and comply with the City of Mesquite's policy on driving.

Must obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety/Emissions Inspection Certification within 6 months of hire.

Preference will be given to applicants who have an Associate's Degree from an accredited college, and/or valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL); Technicians having ASE Master Certification on automotive or medium/Heavy Trucks and familiar with computerized fleet management programs.

WORK SCHEDULE
SECOND SHIFT

Mon - Fri, 12:00 pm to 8:30 p.m. with a 30 min lunch break.

Full Time Employees:

The City of Mesquite offers the Zero Premium, Employee Only Benefits under the following plans: High Deductible Medical Plan, Dental HMO Plan, Vision Plan, and Life Insurance.

The City is self-insured and offers a choice of two medical plans: HSA, and High Deductible Medical Plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Employee medical coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. Employees enrolled in the City's self-insured medical plan also have access to the Mesquite Employee Health Center (MEHC) clinic and pharmacy.

The City offers three dental plan options: a managed plan (DHMO), an indemnity plan (DPPO), an enhanced indemnity plan (DPPO Enhanced). Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates.

The City offers free Vision Insurance to all employees. Dependents can be added for an additional fee.

Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees: Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term Disability

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions.

Other benefits include Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
