Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation seeks Equipment Mechanic I, II, and III to perform repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. Work includes diagnosing systems, maintaining safety features, and coordinating with vendors as needed.

Positions range from entry to senior level, with responsibilities extending to training less experienced technicians and covering shop coordination in absence of leadership. CDL may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience diagnosing and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.

• Experience with brake systems and electrical components.

Equipment Mechanic I, II, & III

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
• Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
• Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
• Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
• Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic II - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above

• Trains less experienced technicians.
• Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.

Equipment Mechanic III - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above

• Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
• Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No degree/diploma required. Experience:

Equipment Mechanic I - 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair

Equipment Mechanic II - 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair

Equipment Mechanic III - 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair

• Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience
• Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of course registration. You will have 2 attempts to pass the written and driving exams.
