Position Information
TxDOT's Atlanta District is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I or II based in our Carthage Maintenance Section in Carthage, TX. At TxDOT, we supply the diagnostic, hand, and power tools you need to get the job done, so you will not be required to provide your own tools. This position also includes networking with other sections mechanics, division mechanics and vendors to be able to achieve the most efficient repairs to TxDOT's equipment. We offer Company-sponsored CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.
Equipment Mechanic I, A16, $40,918 - $61,130 annually
Equipment Mechanic II, A18, $45,521 - $71,055 annually
TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Equipment Mechanic I – Responsibilities
- Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
- Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required, moves items related to these activities.
- Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
- Troubleshot, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II – Responsibilities
- Includes all essential duties listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:
- Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Equipment Mechanic I
Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
Equipment Mechanic II
Experience: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Equipment Mechanic I – Knowledge and Skills
- Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
- Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
- Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
- Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
Equipment Mechanic I – Skills
- Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
Equipment Mechanic II – Knowledge and Skills
- Automatic and manual shift transmission repair
Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
Equipment Mechanic II – Skills
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
- Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications
- Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Must be able to report for duty on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
- Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
- Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
