Job summary

City of El Centro (CA) seeks an experienced Automotive Mechanic to diagnose, repair, and maintain City vehicles and equipment. Under supervision, you will diagnose engines, transmissions, electrical systems and perform repairs on light and heavy vehicles as well as construction equipment.

Responsibilities include testing, overhauls, preventive maintenance, and record-keeping. A Class B license with Tanker Endorsement is required or obtainable within six months; ASE certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• Five (5) or more years of diagnosis, repair and maintenance experience involving automobiles, light duty, medium/heavy duty trucks and construction equipment.
• Must provide own work tools to perform job assignments.
• Possession and maintain a current Class B license with Tanker Endorsement, or obtain within 6 months of employment.
• Possession of or the ability to obtain an Air Conditioning Freon Recycling Certificate.
• ASE certification in either the Auto/Light Truck or Medium/Heavy Truck series preferred, other ASE certifications will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical failures in engines, transmissions, brakes, pumps, electrical systems, and emission controls.
• Overhauls and repairs gas and diesel engines and transmissions, including component replacements.
• Perform major engine tune-ups, measurements, and related repairs.
• Repair front suspension systems, including bushings, king pins, tie rods, and ball joints.
• Fabricate minor body parts and install equipment using welding tools.
• Maintain repair records indicating tasks, hours, and parts costs in the work order system.
• Assist Chief Mechanic with difficult repairs and shop tasks.
