Job summary

ERWSS is an employee-owned company providing field equipment maintenance across active construction sites and equipment yards in the Fort Worth area. The Equipment Mechanic will inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, trailers, and related systems in the field, with on-site and occasional out-of-town travel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on field or mobile mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, or comparable machinery under jobsite conditions.
• Proficiency with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, cooling systems, and powertrains; able to diagnose and complete repairs in the field.
• Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to travel daily to jobsites and work overtime including weekends or after-hours emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Travel to active jobsites to inspect and repair equipment under time-sensitive conditions.
• Coordinate with operators, site supervisors, dispatch, and shop personnel to communicate repair needs and status.
• Determine parts, tools, lifting, towing or vendor support required to complete repairs safely and efficiently.
• Diagnose equipment issues using diagrams, service info, diagnostic tools, and schematics.
• Perform preventive maintenance and field repairs on heavy construction equipment and support vehicles.
• Document work performed, labor time, parts used, and current equipment status in the work-order system.

Job Summary

As a Field Equipment Mechanic, you will travel to active construction jobsites to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment, commercial vehicles, trailers, and support machinery. You will respond to breakdowns, determine whether repairs can be completed safely in the field, and return equipment to service with minimal disruption to project schedules.
This experienced-level role requires sound independent judgment, strong troubleshooting skills, and at least five years of hands-on mechanic experience. Success means completing safe, accurate field repairs, communicating equipment status promptly, and helping crews remain productive.

What You Will Do

• Travel to jobsites to inspect and repair disabled or malfunctioning equipment, often under time-sensitive conditions.
• Coordinate with operators, site supervisors, dispatch, and shop personnel to understand equipment complaints, identify repair needs, and communicate equipment status.
• Determine the parts, tools, lifting support, towing, dealer assistance, or other resources required to complete each repair safely and efficiently.
• Diagnose equipment issues using visual inspections, service information, portable diagnostic tools, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, parts diagrams, and service bulletins.
• Determine whether repairs can be completed safely in the field or require shop, dealer, or approved vendor support.
• Perform preventive maintenance and field repairs on excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, skid steers, cranes, dump trucks, service trucks, trailers, and light-duty vehicles.
• Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, cooling, fuel, exhaust, and drivetrain components.
• Complete oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid service, belt and hose replacement, battery service, and tire and track inspections at the jobsite.
• Assist with component removal and installation, equipment setup, and attachment changes within assigned qualifications; complete operational checks before returning equipment to service.
• Identify leaks, wear, damage, and loose or missing components that could affect equipment safety, reliability, or performance.
• Document the complaint, findings, work performed, labor time, parts and fluids used, and current equipment status accurately in the work-order system.
• Report incomplete work, backordered parts, additional defects, safety concerns, follow-up repairs, and out-of-service conditions promptly.
• Maintain assigned hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and service vehicle in safe, clean, stocked, and field-ready condition.
• Handle oils, fuels, coolants, batteries, tires, and other materials in accordance with company safety and environmental procedures.
• Protect the work area and follow site-specific rules when working near traffic, excavation, lifting operations, and active machinery.
• Follow company policies and applicable OSHA, DOT, EPA, lockout/tagout, lifting and blocking, hot-work, compressed-air, fluid-handling, and PPE requirements.
• Report incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and serious equipment defects promptly.
• Work cooperatively with operators, site supervisors, shop technicians, parts personnel, dispatch, and vendors, and participate in required training and safety meetings.

What You Will Bring

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 5 years of hands-on field or mobile mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, or comparable machinery under jobsite conditions.
• Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, cooling systems, and powertrains, with the ability to diagnose and complete repairs independently in the field.
• Proficiency with common mechanic tools, portable diagnostic equipment, technical service information, and mobile or tablet-based work-order systems.
• Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, parts diagrams, and service bulletins.
• Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record sufficient to operate a company service vehicle safely.
• Ability to travel daily to jobsites and work occasional overtime, weekends, or after hours for emergency breakdown response.
• Ability to communicate clearly, prioritize time-sensitive repairs, and work effectively with field and shop teams.
• What Would Make You a Top Candidate
• Technical school certificate or other formal training in diesel, automotive, heavy-equipment, or industrial maintenance.
• ASE certifications applicable to the assigned equipment or vehicle fleet.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL). A CDL may be required for specific assignments.
• OEM or dealer training for equipment represented in the fleet.
• Welding or mobile air-conditioning certification, where relevant to assigned work.

Physical and Working Conditions

• Work is performed primarily at active construction jobsites and from a service vehicle, with occasional work in the equipment yard or shop.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in awkward positions around machinery and outdoors.
• Ability to lift and handle tools, parts, and materials in accordance with company policy and applicable law, using mechanical assistance or team lifting when appropriate.
• Regular exposure to weather, dust, mud, noise, vibration, oils, fuels, moving equipment, active operations, and uneven terrain.
• Ability to wear required PPE and safely enter, exit, inspect, and service assigned equipment at active jobsites.

Additional Information

• The expected pay range is $30.00-$40.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be based on relevant experience, qualifications, certifications, and business needs.
• Day-shift work is standard; occasional overtime, weekend work, and after-hours emergency response may be required.
• Daily travel to active jobsites is required, and the employee may cover multiple sites in one day.
• Employment may be contingent upon completion of company-required screening and verification of driving eligibility, as applicable.
