Job summary

Illumina is hiring an Equipment Engineer 2 in San Diego to sustain and improve automated Flow Cell Manufacturing equipment. You will troubleshoot, analyze failures, and implement improvements across mechanical, electrical, and automation domains.

The role emphasizes hands-on support, documentation, and collaboration with quality, validation, and R&D to boost safety, yield, and uptime in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical and electrical/electronics troubleshooting skills.
• Working knowledge of automated manufacturing systems incl. PLCs, robotics, machine vision, motion control, servo systems, instrumentation, sensors, industrial communications, vacuum systems, chillers, pneumatic systems, and HMI/SCADA.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, PLC logic, and technical documentation.
• Experience with data analysis tools (SQL, Python, Power BI, JMP, Minitab) to support troubleshooting and reliability improvements.

Responsibilities

• Support manufacturing operations through equipment troubleshooting, sustainment, and engineering improvements while owning assigned subsystems.
• Develop and improve preventive maintenance, calibration, repair, and reliability programs with documentation and training materials.
• Independently troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, controls, automation, robotics, and process issues using root cause analysis.
• Support and troubleshoot automated manufacturing equipment including industrial controls, robotics, machine vision, and motion control.
• Collect and interpret equipment performance data to identify failure trends and improve uptime.
• Support equipment installation, integration, qualification, and readiness activities.
