Base pay range: $106,117.00/yr - $133,192.00/yr

About the Bureau

The Bureau of Health Promotion for Justice-Impacted Populations (HPJIP) aims to reduce social and health consequences of justice system involvement through policy and practice change. We focus on community, racial equity, lived experience, and trauma-informed approaches, promoting evidence-based practices for those impacted by the criminal legal system.

Role of the Epidemiology Unit

The unit supports HPJIP initiatives, conducts public health surveillance, and generates knowledge about the health of justice-impacted New Yorkers through data and research, ensuring our work is evidence-based.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all public health surveillance, program monitoring, evaluation, and research activities.
  • Lead a team of eight research and evaluation staff.
  • Provide expertise on research questions, analytical guidance, and publications.
  • Collaborate with partners to analyze health data for surveillance and evaluation.
  • Incorporate criminal legal system measures into surveys and analyses.
  • Prepare grant proposals, protocols, manuscripts, reports, and presentations.
  • Participate in special studies and other duties as assigned.
Equity and Lived Experience
  • Commit to health equity and addressing injustices related to the criminal legal system.
  • Center lived experience to mitigate the system's impact.
  • Characterize health outcomes of impacted communities.
Bureau Leadership Contributions
  • Communicate with bureau leadership and represent the unit at meetings.
  • Foster collaborations across HPJIP units to ensure data informs policy.
Preferred Skills
  • At least two years of senior team supervisory experience.
  • Expertise in epidemiological data analysis, health services research, and research methodologies.
  • Experience applying a racial equity lens in research and data management.
  • Proficiency in scientific writing, publishing, and grant applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with statistical software (SAS, Stata, SPSS, R) and GIS tools.
  • Understanding of the criminal legal system in NYC.
  • Experience with health data sources like DOHMH surveys, Medicaid databases, etc.
  • Ability to quickly learn new public health topics.
