Overview
The Epidemiologist 2 serves as a mid-level epidemiologist within the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Program within the Communicable and Environmental Disease and Emergency Preparedness Division (CEDEP), and provides leadership for surveillance modernization, data automation, advanced analytics, and quality improvement initiatives. This position leads the development and maintenance of automated surveillance tools (for instance, Syphilis Record Search Algorithm) and analytic processes that improve the quality, completeness, timeliness, and efficiency of STI surveillance activities. The position oversees surveillance data quality across multiple surveillance systems, supports National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS)-based workflows within the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System Base System (NBS), assists with legacy data management in PRISM, and ensures accurate and timely submission of surveillance data to the CDC. Coordinate surveillance data closeout activities, respond to CDC data quality feedback, investigate discrepancies, implement corrective actions, and verify compliance with national surveillance reporting requirements.
  • Conduct advanced epidemiologic analyses to identify disease trends, outbreaks, disparities, and emerging public health concerns. Develop performance measures and data visualization products that improve surveillance monitoring and facilitate communication with leadership, regional programs, and external partners.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners, including regional and local health departments, Disease Intervention Specialists, clinical partners, epidemiologists, informatics teams, CDC, CSTE, and other public health partners, to support surveillance activities and improve surveillance systems and reporting processes.
  • Represent the STI Surveillance program in internal and external workgroups related to surveillance modernization, NBS implementation, electronic case reporting, data quality, and CDC surveillance initiatives.
  • Evaluate surveillance workflows, identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, develop innovative solutions that increase efficiency and data quality, and lead projects that strengthen statewide STI surveillance capacity.
  • Provide direct supervision and technical guidance to at least one STI Epidemiologist 1 staff supporting surveillance, automation, and data quality activities.
