The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and works to advance in all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina's needs. DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. DEQ touches the lives of all North Carolinians in many ways to enhance and ensure our quality of life.

Description of Work

The DEQ Stewardship Program works to ensure that conservation properties and easements held by the State of North Carolina are managed to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and provide open space. The Environmental Technician will assist with the stewardship and management of conservation properties and easements. Regular in-state travel, occasional overnight travel, and arduous field work are required of the occupant of this position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field evaluations of sites utilizing GPS and smartphone technologies to document areas of concern and/or remedial actions of previously documented concerns.
  • Assist with property management practices including hazard fuel reductions, prescribed fire, invasive species treatments.
  • Perform site inspections and refresh conservation boundary markings.
  • Provide technical support to the program including agency database queries and updates, geospatial mapping, and file management.

Facilities, Health, and Safety Division DEQ Facilities Health and Safety Division provides support to DEQ’s divisions at multiple sites across the state that includes: Property management for major buildings at Green Square, Archdale, Reedy Creek Road Complex, and dotted line responsibility for all Division of Marine Fisheries facilities; real property leases and sub-leases throughout the state, (34 sites, 850,000 sq. ft.) facility related contracts, DOTS tickets, office relocations, Motor Fleet and Department owned vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, planes, drones, mobile devices, security, parking, and insurance. The Division is responsible for all aspects of DEQ’s Capital Project Planning and Management, DEQ’S Safety Program, and the Stewardship of over 560 properties and easements protecting over 27,000 acres of conservation lands. The DEQ Stewardship Program works to ensure that conservation properties and easements held by the State of North Carolina are managed to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and provide open space. The program was created with the enactment of the North Carolina Conservation Easements Program (N.C.G.S. 113A-230) and the Conservation Grant Fund (N.C.G.S. 113A-232). The Stewardship Program is responsible for the stewardship of easements and lands that have been acquired as compensatory mitigation by the Division of Mitigation Services (DMS) and individual permit holders. Program activities include monitoring, study, enforcement, and site-management activities for the purposes of protecting the ecological integrity of these conservation properties.
