General Summary

Provides leadership and expertise for the design, implementation and evaluation of Environmental Services education. Facilitates and supports Environmental staff competency through teaching, consultation, collaboration and practice using current knowledge, research and technology. Develops, implements and conducts basic and on going training for continuing in-service education programs for staff. Assist with developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and internal standards. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Ability and knowledge to perform all duties and functions of an Environmental Aide, Specialist, Waste Handler and Team Leader.

2. Stays current with the advances in Environmental Services processes and procedures through periodicals, Networking, Internet, workshops, etc. Provide to reporting Manager information as obtained.

3. Act as a liaison to departments/units to ensure expedient response to patient and customer concerns.

4. Train, educate and develop colleagues to equip them with the skills for excellent customer service.

5. Design and implement training programs within the Environmental Services Department for Team Leaders and first line staff in collaboration with Employee Education and Development as needed.

6. Arrange and coordinate staffing and scheduling of all training programs for the Environmental Services Department.

7. Collect, analyze, evaluate, report and maintain training documentation for the department.

8. Maintain an ongoing assessment of the training needs within the department.

9. Develop and maintain training materials and manuals.

10. Conduct classroom training for department colleagues at all levels.

11. Conduct computer-based training for team leaders and staff.

12. Manage a computer based departmental Quality Assurance program.

13. Act as a resource person for the Environmental Services team in order to promote collaboration and coordination for patient satisfaction.

14. Assess, plan, implement/coordinate and evaluate according to and in compliance with all accrediting

agencies and SJMAA standards:

a. Department Orientation (all colleagues)

b. Colleague Development(Team Leaders and Staff)

c. Preceptor Training (Team Leaders and Staff

15. Works in collaboration with Education Coordinators, Infection Control and Safety Officer to develop,

present and evaluate educational programming for Environmental Services Colleagues.

16. Evaluates the practice/progress of new colleague during orientation. Differentiate lack of knowledge from compliance problems and assists the manager with the performance planning process.

17. Mentor, support and facilitate Environmental Services Colleagues by maintaining a connection with all colleagues on all shifts to promote:

a. Communication

b. Consistent application of cleaning procedures

c. Access to new procedures

18. Provides feedback for 6-month and bi-annual performance reviews as requested by Manager.

19. Assist Manager with accessing and communicating results of Patient Satisfaction survey. Collaborate with Environmental Services Managers to develop a plan to reach and sustain at the top quartile or better.

20. Assume responsibility of Department Safety Ambassador.

Working Conditions

Combination office, classroom, and patient care areas.

Patient care environment with occasional exposure to chemicals, odors, fumes, cleaning solvents, etc.

Reporting Relationships

Direction is received from the Manager for Environmental Services. Supervision is exercised over a group of non-exempt personnel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

2. Considerable experience in Environmental Services duties or related functions within a hospital or

healthcare environment; experience in training and development.

3. A minimum of one year supervisory/ team leader experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to work as a resource to Environmental Services Colleagues with a diverse background.

Computer experience with knowledge in word processing, excel and Power Point

Possess leadership, motivational, coaching, and communication skills.

Working knowledge of JCAHO, OSHA, MDPH and other regulatory agencies.

Considerable knowledge of SJMHS and department policies, procedures and regulations.
