Job summary

Glanbia is seeking an Environmental Sr. Engineer to assist the EHS Manager in plant safety, security, training and environmental programs at the St. Johns facility in Michigan.

This role acts as the site’s environmental compliance owner and supports PSM, boilers and wastewater regulatory needs, with on-call duties. Responsibilities include hazard analysis, leading sustainability initiatives, training program development, and cross-functional collaboration to maintain safety and regulatory

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; minimum 3 years plant experience in safety or environmental domain.
  • Strong knowledge of air and water permitting, RCRA, GHG and sustainability requirements.
  • Ability to read PSM regulations and operating/maintenance instructions.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills, with ability to train others.

Responsibilities

  • Performs hazard analyses and supports action plans to improve safety, environmental, and sustainability performance.
  • Leads sustainability and environmental compliance initiatives, risk assessment, and reporting.
  • Collaborates with EHS Specialist/Manager on safety programs and on-floor safety walks.
  • Develops and maintains training programs, fosters an EHS culture focusing on injury prevention.
  • Coordinates with legal and environmental consultants on permits and reporting.

MWC is a state of the art cheese and whey production facility in St. Johns, MI. MWC is a joint venture between Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Select Milk Producers Inc. (Select).

The Environmental Sr. Engineer is responsible for assisting the EHS Manager in all aspects of plant safety, security, training and environmental programs. In addition, this role works with all departments at all levels, and is the single point owner for environmental compliance. This role will also be the regulatory support for PSM, Boilers, Wastewater, and Sustainability. This position will have on-call duties.

Responsibilities
  • Performs hazard analysis within plant location and assists plant management teams in the development and execution of action plans for the improvement of safety, environmental, and sustainability performance.
  • Responsible for leading all aspects of sustainability and environmental including compliance initiatives, development, risk assessment, reporting, etc.
  • Work with EHS Specialist and EHS Manager on safety programs, including walks on the production floor as well as an active member of the plant’s safety committee.
  • Develops, utilizes and monitors site safety and environmental resources to assure success.
  • Works with legal team and environmental consultants on permit modifications, reporting, and responses as required.
  • Develops and maintains training programs and an EHS culture that promotes a workplace free of injuries. This includes but is not limited to developing or refining specific training i.e. emergency response, qualified electrical, PSM, respiratory protection, etc. Evaluates utilization of corporate training process and material in conjunction with local needs. In conjunction with plant leadership team, develop and coordinate plan to update and maintain all relevant plant training including work instructions.
  • Keeps supervisory/management personnel apprised of any hazardous conditions, environmental compliance issues and unsafe practices and works with team to problem solve and find resolution.
  • Works closely with EHS Manager to implement company initiatives and to lead change.
  • Requires excellent communication skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • MWC point contact for environmental regulatory agency interaction
  • Develops schemes for recycling, pollution reduction and pollution prevention.
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of MWC non-negotiables such as lead the site waste reduction teams and safety committee
  • Keeps records in accordance with good manufacturing process and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)
The Skills you will bring to the team
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience. Minimum of 3 years of plant experience in related industry/manufacturing, environmental management or utility/waste water operations.
  • Strong knowledge of air permitting, water permitting, RCRA, GHG, Sustainability and ability to interact with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as PSM regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, regulators, or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making ability without oversight / approval.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
