Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan seeks an Environmental Specialist II / Scientist II / Engineer II to support environmental projects at the Safford site. You will install and maintain monitoring equipment, analyze data for compliance, and help lead risk-reduction programs while coordinating with management and contractors.

The role involves potential project leadership, audits, and collaboration with site teams to ensure adherence to environmental policies and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Requires A.S. in Environmental Science or higher with RN/experience equivalence; five years mining/environmental ops may substitute degree
• Seven years of experience in environmental monitoring, sampling and reporting in related roles
• HAZWOPPER, Method 9, DOT, CHMM certifications may be required or preferred
• Engineering degree with environmental focus plus relevant experience may meet requirements
• Knowledge of water quality, project management and operator certification is preferred

Where You Will Work

In operation since 2007, Safford operations is a zero-discharge facility and one of the most sustainable mines in the United States. The operation’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies and sustainable practices strongly emphasizes safety and environmental stewardship. Located in southeastern Arizona, close to more than 4 million acres of national forest, employees and their families can connect with the great outdoors while fishing, rafting, hiking and more. Description

Under close supervision, assists in providing technical support and guidance for environmental projects and programs at assigned site.

• Installs, operates, and maintains environmental and emission monitoring instruments and testing equipment. Analyzes data for compliance with regulatory requirements
• Evaluates and assesses environmental risk and develops programs for risk reduction
• Collaborates in recommending appropriate action to management in compliance with regulations
• Reviews and/or Prepares and maintains detailed records and files of environmental data and communications
• Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment
• Maintains basic working knowledge of national, regional and local environmental, occupational health, and other applicable regulations. Maintains knowledge of site environmental policies and procedures
• May provide leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians
• May serve as Project Manager or technical expert on small to medium-sized environmental projects (e.g., compliance, remediation, or reclamation)
• Leads or participates in regular audits and inspections of operations areas for purposes of ensuring compliance with site environmental policies, procedures and requirements of the Environmental Management System
• Coordinates the timely recycling and disposition of materials and other company assets in compliance with applicable legal and other requirements
• Tracks and reports the recycling and disposition of materials and other company assets as directed
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What You Bring To Freeport

Associate's Degree in Environmental Science or closely related area (can substitute an additional five (5) years of experience in mining or mineral processing operations for the degree requirement) and

Seven (7) years' experience in environmental monitoring, sampling and reporting as an Environmental Technician , Specialist or in a closely related role

Additional certification or licensure appropriate to the job may be required or preferred: (US Examples include: HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.)

OR

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical, Agricultural, Mining, Metallurgical, Geological or similar)andat least three (3) years environmental or related experience;OR

Master's degree in Engineering in a related fieldandat least one (1) year environmental or related experience.

Additional certification or licensure appropriate to the job may be required or preferred such as HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.

OR

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Earth Science or related natural science (such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology, Forestry, Agriculture, Meteorology, Environmental/Natural Resource Management) or Mathematics/Computer Science including Accounting and Finance, or Business Management or other Bachelor's degree, and at least three (3) years environmental or related experience;OR

Master's degree in a related field and at least one (1) year environmental or related experience.

Additional certification or licensure appropriate to the job may be required or preferred including HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.

Preferred

Knowledge in Water Quality including APP, SWPPP, SPCC. Project Management experience. Grade 2 Domestic Water Operator Certified in both Distribution and Treatment. Experience with working with Operations and Maintenance personnel in Industrial setting. Proficient in Enablon, EQuIS, and Microsoft Office tools.

Criteria/Conditions

• Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
• Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
• Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
• Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday
• Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently$87,500-$120,000.This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors.
