Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking an Environmental Scientist II to support environmental projects at assigned sites. You will install and operate monitoring equipment, analyze data for regulatory compliance, and help manage vendor contracts while coordinating environmental programs with site teams.

The role requires a BS in Environmental Science or related field (MS preferred) with several years of experience, plus travel up to 50% and Phoenix/Tucson residency. Hybrid work arrangements are available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years environmental or related experience.
  • Master’s degree and at least one year environmental or related experience.
  • Additional certification/licensure such as HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, CHMM may be required or preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, and maintain environmental and emission monitoring instruments and testing equipment.
  • Evaluate and assess environmental risk and develop programs for risk reduction.
  • Review and maintain detailed environmental data records and manage contracts with vendors.
  • Maintain knowledge of national, regional, and local environmental regulations and site policies.
  • Lead or participate as Project Manager or technical expert on environmental projects and audits.
  • Coordinate recycling and disposition of materials in compliance with legal requirements.

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, provides technical support and guidance for environmental projects and programs at assigned site.

  • As the Environmental Scientist II, you install, operate, and maintain environmental and emission monitoring instruments and testing equipment and analyze data for compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • In this role, you evaluate and assess environmental risk and develop programs for risk reduction while collaborating in recommending appropriate action to management in compliance with regulations.
  • Review and/or prepare and maintain detailed records and files of environmental data and communications and evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • You will maintain basic working knowledge of national, regional and local environmental, occupational health, and other applicable regulations, as well as knowledge of site environmental policies and procedures, and may provide leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Serve as Project Manager or technical expert on small to medium-sized environmental projects such as compliance, remediation, or reclamation and lead or participate in regular audits and inspections of operational areas to ensure compliance with site environmental policies, procedures, and Environmental Management System requirements.
  • Coordinate the timely recycling and disposition of materials and other company assets in compliance with applicable legal and other requirements, track and report these activities as directed, and perform other duties as requested.
What You Bring To Freeport
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Earth Science or related natural science (such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology, Forestry, Agriculture, Meteorology, Environmental/Natural Resource Management) or Mathematics/Computer Science including Accounting and Finance, or Business Management or other Bachelor’s degree, and at least three (3) years environmental or related experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in a related field and at least one (1) year environmental or related experience.
  • Additional certification or licensure appropriate to the job may be required or preferred including HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge or experience with Federal and Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado water quality regulation and programs including CWA, NPDES, APP, drinking water.
  • Familiarity with hydrogeologic field methods such as well installation, aquifer testing, water sampling.
  • Experience with data analysis, databases such as EQuIS and data validation.
  • Understanding of groundwater modeling software such as MODFLOW and FEFLOW.
  • Familiarity with well development techniques and well health programs.
  • Project management experience.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel and perform fieldwork under varying conditions.
What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently $87,500-$120,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
