Job summary

The New York State Department of Transportation in Buffalo is seeking an Environmental Specialist Trainee/Specialist to support environmental review for high-priority projects, including those requiring Environmental Impact Statements.

You will review environmental studies, perform technical analyses, interpret regulations, coordinate with agencies, and advise other department areas on environmental compliance as a full-time employee in the HELPS program.

Qualifications

• Four to six years of environmental analysis experience depending on level.

• Education substitution: associate for 2 years; bachelor's for 4 years; master's for 5 years; doctorate for 6 years of experience.

The Environmental Specialist Trainee/Specialist position is within the Major Projects Environmental Review Bureau at the NYS Department of Transportation in Buffalo, supporting environmental review processes for high-priority projects including those requiring Environmental Impact Statements. The role involves reviewing environmental studies, conducting technical analyses, interpreting regulations, coordinating with agencies, and advising other department areas on environmental compliance. This is a full-time competitive class position under the NY HELPS program.

Key qualifications:

• Four to six years of environmental analysis experience depending on level (Trainee 1/2 or Specialist 1)
• Substantial involvement in preparation and review of environmental impact analyses
• Knowledge and application of state and federal environmental laws, regulations, and standards
• Experience with technical analyses on environmental impact matters
• Associate degree may substitute for two years; bachelor's for four years; master's for five years; doctorate for six years of experience
• Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis
