Job summary

MP Materials in Fort Worth, TX is seeking an Environmental Specialist who will lead air permitting, emissions monitoring, and reporting programs to ensure regulatory compliance across the site.

Under the EHS Manager, you will develop strategic compliance plans, maintain records, submit permits and reports, and support continuous improvement in environmental performance while coordinating with operations and maintenance teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety or related discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental, health, and safety or related field.

  • Support environmental assessments for new or modified processes and projects.
  • Assist operations with ensuring control devices operate efficiently.
  • Conduct internal air compliance audits and corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver air compliance training for employees and contractors.
  • Track changes in air quality regulations and communicate impacts to management.

Position Overview:

Under supervision of the EHS Manager, the Environmental Specialist serves as the technical expert for environmental compliance. The Environmental Specialist is responsible for developing strategic compliance plans and objectives to meet current, developing, and future regulatory requirements with a focus on air permitting, emissions monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping, while supporting continuous improvement in environmental performance across the organization. This position will ensure compliance will applicable federal, state, and local air quality and emissions regulations.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and actively update environmental compliance programs in assigned area of responsibility (air, water, or solid waste management).
  • Maintain accurate records of emissions data, control equipment performance, and operational logs.
  • Prepare and submit required reports such as Emission Inventory (EI), TRI, GHG, and deviation reports.
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain all required air permits, including Title V, NSR/PSD, and minor source permits.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret air emissions data from Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS), FTIR, stack testing, or other monitoring methods.
  • Evaluate air pollution control technologies and recommend operational or engineering changes to reduce emissions.
  • Support environmental assessments for new or modified processes and projects (construction, expansion, etc.).
  • Assist operations and maintenance teams with ensuring control devices (e.g., scrubbers, filters, oxidizers) operate efficiently.
  • Conduct internal air compliance audits and corrective action follow-ups.
  • Develop and deliver air compliance training for employees, contractors, and supervisors.
  • Track changes in air quality regulations and communicate potential impacts to management.
  • Support company sustainability initiatives related to greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency, and clean air goals.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve compliance performance.
  • Manage hazardous and chemical waste programs.
  • Perform and document environmental, health, and safety audits.
  • Execute onsite support services for the entire lifecycle of hazardous materials management programs by performing chemical inventories, segregating chemicals, and shipping hazardous waste off-site.
  • Characterize, consolidate, pack, and ship hazardous waste per RCRA and DOT regulations.
  • Develop an understanding of OSHA regulations as well as MP Materials Health and Safety Practices.
  • Respond to chemical spill emergencies by managing the containment, clean up, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Keeps all levels of the facility personnel aware of environmental regulations and pending changes. Educates, clarifies, and simplifies environmental regulations, policies, and procedures into understandable and operations terms.
  • Effectively maintains high level of knowledge and understanding of environmental regulations, policies, and procedures into understandable operations terms.

  • Develops and provides necessary training of site personnel so that all facility employees have the knowledge and skills to comply and enforce environmental regulations and policies. Training should emphasize Environmental over Production - prevention, individual responsibility, and commitment.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety or related discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental, health, and safety or related field.
Desired Qualities:
  • Professional certifications not required but are a plus: CSP, CHMM, and/or CIH.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively train and direct others (peers, employees, contractors/vendors).
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of industrial plant processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial plant operations and maintenance requirements.
