Job summary

BCFS Health and Human Services is seeking an Environmental Services Technician to maintain a clean, safe, and well-functioning facility and exterior property. Responsibilities

  • Clean, sanitize, and disinfect interior and exterior areas per protocols.
  • Perform routine cleaning of offices, conference rooms, halls, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Handle routine floor care (vacuuming, mopping, sweeping).
  • Maintain exterior walkways and grounds cleanliness and appearance.
  • Conduct basic facility maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Identify and report facility concerns and safety hazards.
  • Coordinate with vendors for waste disposal and document shredding services.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and infection prevention protocols.
  • Maintain inventory of environmental service supplies and restock as needed.
  • Support facility readiness for meetings and events.

  • Required High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience


  • Required minimum of 2 years of building maintenance, custodial, housekeeping, environmental services, facilities support, or related experience.

  • Preferred: Experience in healthcare, nonprofit, office, residential, or community service environments.


The Environmental Services Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and well-functioning environment throughout the facility and exterior property. The Technician performs general facility maintenance and repair while utilizing sound professional judgment and established cleaning and disinfection protocols to support infection prevention, participant and staff safety, facility operations, and organizational compliance with applicable health and safety standards. To successfully perform this job, the employee may be expected to perform the following, with or without reasonable accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990:


Essential Functions


  • Clean, sanitize, and disinfect all interior and exterior common areas of the facility in accordance with established protocols.

  • Perform routine cleaning of offices, conference rooms, hallways, entrances, break areas, public restrooms, and other assigned spaces.

  • Perform routine floor care activities including vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, spot cleaning, and basic maintenance of hard surface and carpeted flooring.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of exterior walkways, entrances, and surrounding grounds.

  • Perform general facility maintenance and repair, including repairing woodwork; replacing electrical switches, fixtures, and motors; painting; repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems; and replacing broken glass.

  • Examine facility exterior, interior, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.

  • Perform weekly door and other safety audits as required.

  • Conduct all repairs assigned by work order or supervisor and advise supervisor of all detected significant facility repairs.

  • Identify facility concerns including structural damage, leaks, safety hazards, or malfunctioning equipment and submit work orders through established maintenance processes.

  • Communicate with maintenance vendors and contractors and share information effectively and timely with campus administration.

  • Coordinate and track scheduled pickups with approved vendors for document shredding, electronic waste disposal, and waste management services.

  • Safely collect, transport, and dispose of general waste, recycling, and hazardous materials in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and manage recycling, composting, and standard waste disposal streams.

  • Monitor inventory levels of environmental service supplies and restock hand sanitizer, soap, paper towels, tissues, and other essential facility items.

  • Assist with moving furnishings and equipment such as desks, tables, chairs, and file cabinets to support organizational operations and facility readiness.

  • Move, install, assemble, and repair all furniture when requested.

  • Install wall hangings, mirrors, blackboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items as requested.

  • Install door and window assemblies and hardware, including window glass and screens.

  • Install ceiling and flooring materials.

  • Transport equipment and furniture as needed between facilities.

  • Monitor ventilation performance and notify management regarding HVAC concerns and filter replacement needs.

  • Use equipment and tools following safety guidelines, and keep tools, cleaning equipment, and supplies properly maintained, stored, and in optimum working order through required preventative maintenance.

  • Keep work area free of unsafe conditions and inform supervisor of problems that cannot be immediately corrected.

  • Comply with all OSHA regulations, infection prevention protocols, safety guidelines and techniques (including lifting), and organizational policies.

  • Maintain cleanliness standards that promote a safe, welcoming, and professional environment for staff, participants, visitors, and partners.

  • Work on multiple projects and tasks within a given time, with frequent interruptions and deadlines.

  • Manage ticketing system.

  • Work collaboratively with others and maintain emotional control under stress.

  • Attend required trainings and maintain required certifications.

  • Other job duties as assigned.


Measurable Deliverables


  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, organized, and well-maintained environment throughout assigned interior and exterior facility areas.

  • Complete assigned daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning and maintenance schedules according to established standards.

  • Ensure all public and employee-use areas are cleaned and disinfected according to established protocols.

  • Complete weekly door and safety audits and report findings as required.

  • Complete repairs assigned by work order or supervisor within established timeframes.

  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of environmental service supplies and report replenishment needs promptly.

  • Complete waste disposal, recycling, and hazardous materials handling procedures in compliance with organizational standards.

  • Submit work orders and safety concerns within established timeframes.

  • Maintain tools and cleaning equipment in safe and operational condition through required preventative maintenance.

  • Complete required inspections, logs, and environmental service documentation accurately and timely.

  • Attend all required training courses and safety meetings.

  • Support facility readiness for meetings, events, inspections, and organizational activities.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions


  1. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing.

  2. Frequent lifting 10–45 pounds.

  3. Infrequent lifting of more than 45 pounds, with assistance.

  4. Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, and noise.

  5. Frequent exposure to biological hazards.

  6. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions.

  7. Valid driver’s license.


Credentials, Skills, and Abilities


  1. Maintain current licenses and certificates required for the position including but not limited to First Aid, OSHA/Safety Training, CPR, etc.

  2. Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens.

  3. Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.

  4. Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background and motor vehicle check (fingerprints needed if applicant has lived out of state within the past 5 years).

  5. Demonstrate the ability to: a. Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics. b. Communicate effectively in writing and verbally in English; Spanish proficiency preferred. c. Work in a fast-paced environment. d. Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position. e. Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. f. Travel as needed. g. Manage time effectively and efficiently.
