Job summary

UPMC is seeking a part-time night shift Environmental Services worker to support cleaning and disinfecting duties across hospital areas. The role requires rotating nights, weekends, and holidays with a 12-hour or 8-hour block structure as needed.

Eligible employees may participate in the off-shift program with a $2 night differential, while PTO and benefits remain unaffected by program participation. Employees must meet basic qualifications, complete orientation, and maintain performance

Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED preferred.
• Prior training in institutional cleaning is desired but not required.
• Must be able to lift and handle loads, bend, stoop, climb, and stand for long periods.

Responsibilities

• Operate all departmental cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
• Climb ladders to hang drapes and reach high areas.
• Clean and service hospital areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
• Wash walls, ceilings, windows, drapes, and fixtures as required.
• Move equipment and supplies between areas and support heavy cleaning tasks.
• Follow Infection Control procedures and wear PPE as required.
• Disinfect patient rooms and other spaces following proper protocols.

Off-Shift Program Guidelines

• As part of the program, participants must commit to working to the maximum of their budgeted shifts based on FTE status as off-shift hours (12-hour blocks such as 3 p.m. to 3 a.m., 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., etc. or 8-hour blocks such as 11 p.m to 7 a.m, etc.).
• Eligible participants will receive a $2 night program differential, on top of their hospital’s current off-shift differential, for off-shift hours worked as part of the program.
• Any additional worked day shifts (meetings, competencies, additional overtime shifts) will be paid without the night program differential.
• Those who work rotating off-shift shifts as part of their schedule but are not participants in the off-shift program, will not receive the differential.
• All PTO (paid time off) requests must continue to be approved, in advance, by the participant’s unit director/manager, and the off-shift program differential will not be applied to the hourly rate paid for PTO.
• Business unit leaders will determine the appropriate number of program participants based on business unit and department needs.

Off-Shift Program Eligibility

• Eligible participants must be in a role in a regular full-time or part-time status, and work in a department that requires 24-hour on-site coverage.
• Employees who have completed their orientation period and have at least six-months of experience are eligible to participate.
• Eligible participants must have a performance rating of Solid/Strong/Good to enter the program and not received any corrective action within the last six months. Maintaining a Solid/Strong/Good rating will be required to remain in the program. New employees are able to enter the program at the time of hire.
• If a participant resigns or is removed from the program for not meeting the night program guidelines, they are not permitted to return to the program for one calendar year.
• If a participant does not work steady night shifts, they are not eligible to receive the additional differential and their participation will be evaluated for removal from the program.
• There is no impact to medical benefits, short-term disability (STD), long-term disability (LTD), PTO, or tuition reimbursement as part of this program.

Responsibilities

• Employee operates all departmental equipment in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner. Upon completion of equipment usage, must maintain equipment before putting back in the proper storage location; i.e., wipe the entire machine down, wrap the cords in a neat orderly fashion after cleaning assigned areas.
• Climbs ladders to hang cubicle drapes and window drapes or to reach areas for other cleaning/disinfecting purposes.
• Cleans and services hospital building areas, moves furniture, equipment, and supplies in and around hospital departments, and performs a variety of housekeeping and other duties to maintain the hospital in an orderly and sanitary condition as assigned.
• Washes walls, ceilings, and inside windows, by hand, using water, cleaning solution, sponge, and cloths or machine; may be called upon to wash outside windows and screens. Washes drapes, cubicles, mops, and rags when requested by the Supervisor or Department Director.Gathers and disposes of refuse; washes wastebaskets and large refuse containers and relines with plastic bags; cleans light fixtures, tops of windows, door frames and other high places using ladders or scaffolds when necessary.
• When requested by Supervision, moves equipment, furniture, bulk moves of files both on and off site; procurement and/or return of files from an already established filing system
• Uses chemicals in a safe/efficient manner according to Hospital/departmental guidelines. Responsibility of employees to wear all personal protective equipment as required.
• Disinfects areas by scrubbing and spraying with approved germicide cleaner
• Terminally cleans and disinfects all patient rooms, isolation rooms, floors; beds, restrooms, furniture and equipment after a transfer or discharge from a patient following Infection Control procedures.
• Collects all regular and infectious waste in a manner established by the Infection Control Committee and/or infectious waste guidelines.
• Scours, polishes, and washes sinks, tubs, mirrors, and other plumbing fixtures; cleans water coolers and replaces disposables, such as towels, soap, liquid soap dispensers, and toilet tissue.
• Employee will be held accountable for daily and routine quality checks/reviews and to make all improvements that are deemed necessary.
• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and wet scrubs floors, halls, and stairways.
• Receives daily assignment and supplies; transports them to the work area. At the end of shift, returns unused supplies to hopper and/or supply room; also returns used and unused mops, cleans utility cart and equipment.
• Performs repetitive tasks in maintaining an assigned area of the Hospital in a sanitary, orderly, and attractive condition.
• Assembles necessary cleaning supplies and equipment for transporting to the assigned work area.
• Makes discharge beds with clean linen in the prescribed manner. Requests help in heavy furniture or equipment moves; notifies supervisor when supplies are low; reports any mechanical failure or conditions as observed in assigned areas for preparation of work request for Engineering Department.

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Experience Required

Prior training in institutional cleaning desired but not necessary; previous experience in similar work preferred. Other qualifications include the following: must be able to lift and handle heavy to light loads by pushing or pulling refuse carts and electric or battery powered equipment; must be able to bend, stoop, climb, push, pull, or crawl; must be able to follow written and oral instructions, policies and procedures; must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time;
