Job summary

UNC Health Appalachian is seeking an Environmental Service Worker at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. You will perform cleaning tasks, maintain infection control standards, and support a safe, healing environment for patients and staff.

Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to cleaning protocols.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Knowledge of infection control and sanitation standards.
  • Dependable, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning assignments including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing.
  • Strip and refinish floors, carpet cleaning and extraction, and safely handle waste removal.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control and hospital sanitation procedures.
  • Securely dispose of confidential documents in accordance with facility policies.
  • Restock cleaning supplies and promptly report any maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Follow all safety protocols and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with hospital staff to ensure a clean and welcoming environment for all.
  • Assist with emergency cleaning or special projects as needed.

What You’ll Do as an Environmental Service Worker

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required.

Experience:

Prior experience in environmental services or healthcare preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting throughout the shift.

  • Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials.
  • May work irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
