Job summary

UNC Health Appalachian is seeking a Telemetry Technician to support continuous cardiac monitoring and accurate rhythm interpretation. You will work closely with nurses and healthcare professionals to identify changes in patient conditions and contribute to timely, high-quality care.

Position is based in Boone, NC with a PRN schedule requiring flexibility to cover days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed by the department.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 year of healthcare experience preferred, but not required.
  • BLS through the American Heart Association required at time of hire.
  • EKG or Telemetry Monitoring Certification required, or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms using telemetry equipment.
  • Accurately document rhythm strips, oxygen saturation levels, and other required patient monitoring data.
  • Perform EKGs as directed by licensed nursing staff.
  • Notify nurses and other healthcare providers of significant rhythm changes or patient status concerns.
  • Maintain continuous surveillance of assigned patients to support safe, effective care.
  • Communicate clearly during routine and emergency situations.
  • Follow established patient safety protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Collaborate with licensed nursing staff to support efficient patient care and workflow.

What You’ll Do as a Telemetry Technician

Continuously monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms using telemetry equipment

Accurately document rhythm strips, oxygen saturation levels, and other required patient monitoring data

Perform EKGs as directed by licensed nursing staff

Promptly notify nurses and other healthcare providers of significant rhythm changes or patient status concerns

Maintain continuous surveillance of assigned patients to support safe, effective care

Communicate clearly and effectively during routine and emergency situations

Follow established patient safety protocols and departmental procedures

Collaborate with licensed nursing staff to support efficient patient care and workflow

Maintain accurate documentation while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred, but not required

Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association required at time of hire

EKG or Telemetry Monitoring Certification required, or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Strong ability to interpret cardiac rhythms accurately

Knowledge of telemetry monitoring equipment and EKG procedures

Effective communication skills, particularly during emergency situations

Ability to remain organized and adaptable in a fast-paced healthcare environment

Knowledge of medical terminology and patient safety practices

Strong attention to detail and documentation skills

Physical Demands

Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting throughout the workday

Occasional lifting or moving of patients and equipment as needed

Frequent use of telemetry monitoring systems and computer equipment

Visual and auditory acuity necessary to accurately interpret telemetry readings and alarms

Working Conditions

Indoor, hospital-based healthcare environment

Frequent interaction with patients, nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals

Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and other healthcare-related hazards

Required adherence to infection prevention practices, standard precautions, and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines

PRN schedule requiring flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays based on department needs
