Job summary

UNC Health Appalachian is seeking an experienced RN House Supervisor at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. This role combines clinical leadership with hospital operations, coordinating nursing care across inpatient units and guiding frontline teams to ensure safe, efficient patient care.

As a working clinical leader, you’ll assess staffing needs, assign resources, participate in performance improvement, and respond to emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of acute care nursing experience.
  • One (1) or more years of leadership experience preferred.
  • Current NC RN licensure.
  • BLS required at time of hire; ACLS and PALS within one year.

As a working clinical leader, the RN House Supervisor maintains bedside competency and is prepared to step in when needed to support patients and nursing teams.

Compensation: Starts at $40.42per hour or higher, based on education, experience,and internal equity

What You’ll Do as an RN House Supervisor

Hospital Operations & Nursing Coordination

Coordinate day-to-day nursing operations across hospital units to support safe, efficient, and effective patient care.

Assess staffing needs based on patient census, acuity, staffing ratios, available resources, and operational needs.

Coordinate nursing staff assignments and resources in accordance with established staffing and budgetary guidelines.

Help address changing patient care demands and operational priorities throughout the shift.

Collaborate with unit managers, nursing leadership, medical staff, and other departments to promote continuity and efficiency of care.

Clinical Leadership & Staff Support

Serve as an accessible clinical and leadership resource for nursing staff throughout the hospital.

Provide guidance and support to frontline team members to promote safe practice, professional development, empowerment, and job satisfaction.

Maintain clinical and bedside competency and assist with direct patient care when needed.

Support clinical decision‑making and help staff appropriately elevate patient care concerns.

Promote effective teamwork, communication, and collaboration across nursing units and disciplines.

Provide leadership input regarding staff performance and employee evaluations as appropriate.

Patient Safety & Emergency Response

Promote a hospital-wide culture focused on patient safety, quality, and exceptional care.

Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, changes in patient condition, staffing challenges, and other urgent operational needs.

Assist in coordinating resources and communication during emergency situations.

Ensure nursing activities are performed within applicable licensure requirements, organizational policies, and standards of care.

Identify and communicate significant clinical, regulatory, or operational concerns to the appropriate manager or nursing leader.

Support compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, nursing standards, and UNC Health Appalachian policies and procedures.

Partner with nursing leadership to identify opportunities to improve patient care, workflow, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

Participate in leadership initiatives and quality or performance improvement activities.

Promote consistent nursing practices and effective care delivery across the continuum.

Help maintain an environment of accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited nursing program

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of acute care nursing experience required

One (1) or more years of previous leadership experience in a supervisory, charge nurse, or similar clinical leadership role preferred

Licensure & Certifications

Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in North Carolina

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required within one (1) year of hire

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the American Heart Association is required within one (1) year of hire

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Strong clinical judgment and ability to provide safe, effective nursing care within applicable licensure, policy, and regulatory requirements

Demonstrated leadership ability with the confidence to provide guidance and direction in a dynamic hospital environment

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families, nurses, physicians, leadership, and other healthcare professionals

Ability to coordinate multiple priorities, staffing needs, and patient care demands across nursing units

Ability to remain calm, organized, and responsive during emergencies and rapidly changing situations

Strong problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and clinical decision‑making skills

Understanding of nursing care across the continuum and principles of quality and performance improvement

Commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, teamwork, and an exceptional patient experience

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships across departments and disciplines

Ability to provide leadership while maintaining clinical competency and supporting bedside care when needed

Physical Requirements

Frequent walking and standing throughout the hospital and patient care areas

Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, positioning, pushing, and pulling associated with clinical nursing responsibilities

Ability to lift and/or assist with weights of 50 pounds or greater as required for patient care

Manual dexterity and mobility necessary to perform clinical nursing responsibilities

Visual acuity necessary for patient assessment, documentation, medication administration, and other clinical responsibilities

Ability to sustain prolonged periods of physical activity during a shift

Work is performed throughout an acute care hospital environment with regular interaction with patients, families, nursing staff, physicians, leadership, and other clinical departments.

Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other clinical or environmental hazards.

Requires flexibility to work variable shifts based on hospital operational needs, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, changes in patient condition, staffing needs, and fluctuating workloads.

May require movement between multiple nursing units and patient care areas during the shift.

Requires the ability to balance leadership and operational responsibilities with direct clinical support when patient care needs require it.
