Job summary

Leidos seeks an Environmental Scientist for the NASA NEMCON at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. You will support waste operations, oversee disposal shipments, and supervise post-emergency spill cleanup to ensure compliance with RCRA, DOT, TSCA, and related regulations.

The role requires a Bachelor's in engineering, environmental science, or chemistry with eight years of related experience, plus certifications in HAZMAT and HAZWOPER.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or related scientific discipline with eight years of directly related work experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations and rules regarding waste management (hazardous waste, universal wastes, PCBs, asbestos, DEA controlled substances, etc), transportation (DOT), and emergency response and post‑emergency cleanup (OSHA HAZWOPER).
  • Obtain DOT HAZMAT employee certification within 90 days of employment and biennially thereafter.
  • Obtain RCRA Hazardous Waste/TSDF worker certification within six months of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification within one month of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Must read, analyze, and interpret regulations and communicate precise data effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Possess valid driver’s license and be eligible for federal facility clearance.
  • Must successfully pass an occupational health physical to maintain qualifications and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing and evaluating environmental problems using scientific methods to prevent pollution and develop solutions.
  • Review and interpret Federal, State, or local environmental regulations and their impact on facility programs.
  • Evaluate solid wastes to classify and determine regulatory requirements for transport, recycling, treatment, or disposal.
  • Assist in developing contract requirements for environmental studies and waste management capabilities.
  • Coordinate shipments of waste materials for disposal or recycling per regulatory requirements.
  • Act as Site Supervisor for post-emergency spill cleanup and first responder operations per HAZWOPER.
  • Prepare environmental reports and studies detailing pollution causes and future risks; develop guidelines for compliance objectives.
  • Ensure safe operation and proper handling of by-products and hazardous wastes; manage waste segregation and containerization.
