Job summary

City of Austin is seeking an Environmental Scientist Sr. to manage complex environmental protection programs under minimal supervision. This role involves planning, site selection, data analysis, and reporting for capital projects and regulatory compliance.

The candidate will provide technical guidance and training where needed. The position requires advanced knowledge, a relevant degree with several years of experience, and possession of Texas environmental licenses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related field with six years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in Environmental Science or related field with four years of relevant experience.
  • One additional year of experience may substitute for one year of education, up to four years.

  • Plan, prioritize, and track technical resources for projects.

  • Perform chemical, biological, and physical testing and classification.
  • Interpret water quality, flow, and biological data.

About This Position Job Description:

Purpose: Under minimal supervision and using advanced knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures, implement and/or manage environmental protection and assessment projects/ programs. Responsible for projects of advanced scope and complexity.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Perform project planning, prioritization, and tracking of technical resources
  2. Conduct site selection and study design
  3. Operate/calibrate equipment
  4. Perform chemical, biological and physical testing and classification
  5. Interpret water quality, flow and biological data
  6. Conduct training in sampling and analysis
  7. Organize and prepare reports and memos based on data evaluation
  8. Review and interpret policies, codes, regulations and ordinances
  9. Perform environmental assessments on proposed capital projects, systems, programs and development plans
  10. Assist in development of code changes and rules development
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

An employee at the Environmental Scientist Sr. level does not supervise, but may provide leadership, guidance, and technical support to others.

  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Life Science, Natural Science or related field plus six years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Life Science, Natural Science or related field plus four years of relevant experience.
  • One additional year of experience may substitute for one year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four years.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience in performing on-site filed testing/evaluation, limited inspection and report preparation for asbestos and lead projects, mold investigation and sampling, and managing other hazardous material projects.
  • Current Asbestos Individual Consultant License from the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS).
  • Current Lead Risk Assessor Certification from TDSHS.
  • Current Mold Assessment Consultant (MAC) License from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Work Hours - 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Hours may vary. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required based upon work demands and business needs.

Salary - $72,220.00 - $90,280.00

Driving Requirement (if applicable):

This position may require a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by your hire date. External new hires must meet the City’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) standards (e.g., no more than 3 moving violations or 6 points in the last 36 months).

Travel:

If the position requires travel, you must meet Driver Safety Program standards, Otherwise, you are responsible for transportation to and from multiple job sites as needed.

Essential/Critical Employee Designation:

Some positions are designated as Critical or Essential. Employees in these roles are required to report to work during emergencies or when operations are modified. This may include working from a designated site or an alternative work location.

Work Conditions:

Work hours may vary based on operational needs and may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments. Must have the ability to read, write and speak English fluently. A skills assessment may be required as part of the hiring process.

Veteran Preference:

Veteran candidates must provide a copy of their DD-214 at the interview to receive the veteran’s preference.
