Job summary

Apex Companies, LLC is seeking an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientist in Iselin, NJ. This role blends fieldwork (about 80%) with office tasks (about 20%) on diverse environmental projects across New Jersey and New York, including Long Island and NYC boroughs.

Responsibilities include soil/groundwater sampling, Phase I/II activities, remediation oversight, and data reporting. Travel to sites is required, with occasional overnight stays as projects dictate.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or related field.
• 2+ years of experience with environmental field sampling and data collection.
• Experience with NJDEP and NYSDEC regulations.
• Proficiency with environmental field procedures.
• Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
• Experience with data management and environmental report preparation.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Strong safety awareness and safe work practices.
• Ability to learn across a wide variety of project types.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to finish work on time and within project budgets.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred.
• Light construction experience or hands-on field skills.
• Experience with remediation oversight, stormwater, or subcontractor oversight.

Apex is seeking an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientistto join our team in Iselin, NJ. This is a great opportunity for an environmental professional who enjoys hands‑on fieldwork, wants exposure to a variety of environmental projects, and is looking for a clear path to grow.

This position will support projects throughout New Jersey and New York, including Long Island and the New York City boroughs. The role is approximately 80% field / 20% office and will involve visiting a variety of project sites to perform environmental sampling, inspections, oversight, and data collection.

Your responsibilities as an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientist:

• Conduct environmental field sampling and data collection, including soil, groundwater, and vapor intrusion sampling.
• Perform environmental due diligence activities, including Phase I inspections and reporting.
• Support Phase II investigations, remediation activities, and environmental reporting.
• Perform operation and maintenance activities, including oversight of sub-slab vapor mitigation systems.
• Conduct and oversee stormwater-related work, including subcontractor oversight and documentation.
• Provide field oversight during remediation and other environmental construction activities.
• Oversee subcontractor activities, including monitoring well installations, remediation activities, UST removals, and other field procedures.
• Maintain accurate field notes and generate environmental data of known and appropriate quality.
• Prepare technical reports, field documentation, and other project deliverables.
• Assist with basic proposal preparation.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and other project team members.
• Complete assigned tasks accurately, safely, on schedule, and within established project budgets.
• Travel to project sites throughout NJ and NY, with limited overnight travel as project needs require.
• Develop proficiency across a variety of environmental project types and procedures.

What We're Looking For:

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• 2+ years of experience with environmental field sampling and data collection.
• Experience working with applicable NJDEP and NYSDEC regulations.
• Demonstrated proficiency with environmental field procedures.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
• Experience with data management and environmental report preparation.
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Strong safety awareness and a demonstrated understanding of safe work practices.
• Ability and willingness to learn and become proficient across a wide variety of project types.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to complete work in a timely manner and within project budgets and schedules.
• Valid driver's license, good driving history, and reliable transportation are required, as the position requires driving a personal vehicle to project sites.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight occasionally for field assignments.
