Job summary

Apex Companies, LLC is seeking an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientist to join our Iselin, NJ team. This role blends field sampling, site assessments, and data reporting on NJ and NY projects, with travel across the region.

You will work 80% in the field and 20% in the office, growing professionally through hands-on fieldwork, Phase I/II activities, and environmental reporting, while contributing to client success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or related field.
• 2+ years of environmental field sampling and data collection experience.
• Experience with NJDEP and NYSDEC regulations.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and organization skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental field sampling (soil, groundwater, vapor intrusion) and data collection.
• Perform Phase I inspections and reporting; support Phase II investigations.
• Oversee remediation activities and environmental testing programs.
• Provide field oversight of sub-slab vapor mitigation and stormwater work.
• Prepare technical reports and project deliverables; assist with proposals.
• Communicate with project managers, clients, subcontractors; travel as needed.

Apex is seeking an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientist to join our team in Iselin, NJ. This is a great opportunity for an environmental professional who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, wants exposure to a variety of environmental projects, and is looking for a clear path to grow.

This position will support projects throughout New Jersey and New York, including Long Island and the New York City boroughs. The role is approximately 80% field / 20% office and will involve visiting a variety of project sites to perform environmental sampling, inspections, oversight, and data collection.

Your responsibilities as an Environmental Scientist - Project Scientist:

• Conduct environmental field sampling and data collection, including soil, groundwater, and vapor intrusion sampling.
• Perform environmental due diligence activities, including Phase I inspections and reporting.
• Support Phase II investigations, remediation activities, and environmental reporting.
• Perform operation and maintenance activities, including oversight of sub-slab vapor mitigation systems.
• Conduct and oversee stormwater-related work, including subcontractor oversight and documentation.
• Provide field oversight during remediation and other environmental construction activities.
• Oversee subcontractor activities, including monitoring well installations, remediation activities, UST removals, and other field procedures.
• Maintain accurate field notes and generate environmental data of known and appropriate quality.
• Prepare technical reports, field documentation, and other project deliverables.
• Assist with basic proposal preparation.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and other project team members.
• Complete assigned tasks accurately, safely, on schedule, and within established project budgets.
• Travel to project sites throughout NJ and NY, with limited overnight travel as project needs require.
• Develop proficiency across a variety of environmental project types and procedures.

What We’re Looking For:

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• 2+ years of experience with environmental field sampling and data collection.
• Experience working with applicable NJDEP and NYSDEC regulations.
• Demonstrated proficiency with environmental field procedures.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
• Experience with data management and environmental report preparation.
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Strong safety awareness and a demonstrated understanding of safe work practices.
• Ability and willingness to learn and become proficient across a wide variety of project types.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to complete work in a timely manner and within project budgets and schedules.
• Valid driver's license, good driving history, and reliable transportation are required, as the position requires driving a personal vehicle to project sites.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight occasionally for field assignments.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification Is preferred.
• Light construction experience or hands-on field skills.
• Experience with remediation oversight, stormwater work, or subcontractor oversight.

Annual Expected Pay Range

$65,000 - $75,000 USD
