Job Description

The Environmental Scientist supports all aspects of the environmental and planning programs for Kuna Engineering and its clients throughout Alaska. The position will support clients in planning and executing environmental projects such as work plan development, studies, investigations, permitting, reporting, field work, and regulatory compliance. Support may also include managing field programs and team logistics. The position is expected to support Kuna’s community and regional planning business line, including comprehensive plans, economic development plans, hazard mitigation plans, transportation plans, energy plans, and other infrastructure development plans at community, regional, and state levels. The Environmental Scientist will work with the Environmental Department Manager on business development and proposal writing as assigned, engaging in Kuna’s seller-doer business development methodology. The role involves providing business leads and development strategies. The target utilization is 75% over Kuna’s fiscal year.

Responsibilities
  • Technical planning and execution of environmental and community/regional planning projects, including document authoring and completion.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and their application to various clients and environmental media.
  • Leadership of field sampling and data collection projects, including leading other Kuna employees and/or subcontractors.
  • Management of health and safety for field programs as assigned.
  • Periodic client interaction, focusing on permitting and environmental programs.
  • Providing regulatory support and coordination with local, state, and federal environmental agencies.
  • Assisting and providing technical expertise for other environmental compliance or permitting projects/programs.
  • Researching and explaining regulations, policies, or procedures.
Qualifications
  • Degree in environmental sciences, engineering, chemistry, natural resource management, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience.
  • Ability to maintain a safety-conscious work environment.
  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, reliability, and accountability.
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in work.
  • Strong organizational skills and systematic work methods.
  • Effective team collaboration and professional demeanor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including active listening.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/outdoors

Noise level: Typically standard office noise

Environment: Office setting and project sites inside and outside

Physical requirements: Occasionally lift/move up to 25 lbs; frequently sit, stand, walk, use hands, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, see, taste, smell, and carry/lift weights.
