Summary of Work

As our Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of and monitoring underground storage tank facilities; overseeing excavation and cleanup of leaking underground storage tanks; managing the certification of compliance in the underground storage tank database; conducting fuel samples for analysis; contributing to the development of an online underground storage tank and owner/operator database; and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.
  • DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.
  • To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or a closely related field, and two years of related experience.
  • To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or a closely related field.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license. Out-of-State training or meetings may occur occasionally.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, computer skills (desirable), and good interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the management of underground storage tank systems, remediation of hydrocarbon products, or a background in soil science is preferred.
  • A master's degree in a related field may substitute for the work experience requirement.
