Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist in Columbus, OH to perform field work, permit applications, and project coordination within the Environmental Services practice. The role involves wetlands knowledge, GIS data analysis, and coordination with multiple agencies.

The position requires 4+ years of related experience, a relevant bachelor’s degree, and the ability to travel up to 50% for field assignments while ensuring safety and quality in all tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Botany, Soil Science, or related natural science from an accredited program.
  • 4+ years professional experience in environmental field audits, surveys, and permitting; 6 years preferred.
  • Knowledge of wetlands, Section 404/401/Section 10 permitting.
  • Knowledge of MO, IL, IN, OH permitting processes and wetland/stormwater governance.
  • Proficient with GPS/GIS data collection and ArcGIS.
  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company vehicle safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental compliance audits and permit applications for energy, transmission, oil&gas, and renewables projects.
  • Coordinate field surveys, permitting with federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Assist with wetland delineations and habitat evaluations for threatened species.
  • Collect GIS data, perform GPS work, and produce technical reports.
  • Support project managers with field tasks, permit tracking, and agency consultations.
  • Prepare QA/QC reviews and assist with compliance tasks.
