Job description

Location: White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico Schedule (FT/PT): Regular Full Time Travel Required: No Government Clearance: Ability to Obtain

POSITION PURPOSE:

Support environmental regulatory compliance projects at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), NM. The WSMR is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), Federal Executive Orders, and WSMR environmental policy and guidelines. The position will be responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental Federal, State and WSMR regulations related to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), and other environmental areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to hazardous waste, universal waste and used oil.
  • Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers, and other specialists to address environmental problems.
  • Review waste characterization data and apply EPA hazardous waste identification codes.
  • Conduct sampling of various environmental media, assist with data interpretation and reporting.
  • Communicate scientific and regulatory information to clients, peers, and other site personnel through oral briefings, written documents, and formal meetings.
  • Participate in field efforts as needed to support the successful execution of projects.
  • Under the guidance of the Project Manager, evaluate analytical laboratory data and draw conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Prepare, review, and update technical reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or related field; or technical training combined with 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of RCRA permit compliance and requirements.
  • Working knowledge of waste characterization and hazardous waste determinations per EPA regulations.
  • Working knowledge of waste management operations including labeling and documentation procedures.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow instructions/schedules/timelines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, and client as well as outside business associates.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information and respond effectively and sensitively to questions from client, managers, staff, and plant operational personnel.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and make decisions, solve problems, exercise good judgment, work under pressure, work with minimal supervision and prioritize workload.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel and Word
  • Commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
Special Requirements:
  • Ability to pass Federal background check and pre-employment drug screening
  • Must have valid driver's license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current OSHA HAZWOPER certification is preferred.
  • Advanced Hazardous Waste Management Certification.
  • DoT HazMat ground shipper certification.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous waste management procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to safely operate waste drum handling equipment such as forklifts, dollies, bung wrenches, etc.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; safety operate motor vehicles in traffic and on unimproved roads.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Outdoors and indoors including warehouse environment.
  • Will include working under difficult conditions with extreme heat, humidity, and wind.
  • Will be exposed to moving parts/equipment, forklifts, lift gates, trucks, etc.
