Job summary

The Anchorage Health Department is seeking an Environmental Sanitarian I to review permits, inspect facilities and enforce sanitation standards across public health environments in Anchorage, AK.

Typical duties include inspecting food establishments, pools, and housing facilities; investigating reported illnesses; and providing technical guidance to permit holders. A valid Alaska driver’s license and MOA certifications are required or pursued within specified timelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or a related discipline and one (1) year of experience as an Environmental Sanitarian I.
• Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or a related discipline and three (3) years of experience in environmental science or related fields, including one year as Environmental Sanitarian I.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and five (5) years of related experience, including one year as Environmental Sanitarian I.
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
• Municipality of Anchorage Certification as a Designated Peace Officer within six months of hire.
• Certified Pool/SPA Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator within six months of hire.
• FDA Food Safety Inspection Officer Certification within six months of hire.
• State of Alaska Certification as a Pesticide Applicator within six months of hire.
• Satisfactory background check including criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Reviews permit applications and plans, approves permits and inspects facilities.
• Inspects public facilities including food establishments, hotels, schools and pools to ensure sanitation standards.
• Investigates complaints about potential foodborne illness and housing or noise concerns.
• Provides technical assistance and public health education to permit holders and the public.
• Updates Air Quality Index and related information.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
