Qualifications

  • Experience leading EHS programs in highly regulated environments a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the site SHEMP and manage EHS programs across the AOS site.
  • Ensure compliance with NASA, OSHA, EPA, FAA and applicable state/local rules.
  • Oversee lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, PPE and hazardous materials.
  • Conduct inspections, risk assessments, JHAs and drive corrective actions.
  • Lead or support incident investigations and safety reporting activities.
  • Maintain environmental programs for hazardous waste, spills, SDS and recycling.
  • Coordinate with leadership to integrate EHS into maintenance and operations.
  • Deliver safety training, toolbox talks and awareness initiatives.
  • Track EHS performance metrics and report to leadership and customers.
  • Support audits and inspections by NASA, DoD, and external bodies.
  • Provide EHS guidance for new projects, equipment, and processes.
  • Serve as liaison with NASA AFRC Safety and other stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement and risk reduction across AOS operations.

Primary Function

Reports to the AOS Site Lead and serves as the senior on-site authority for Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) activities supporting Aircraft Operations Support (AOS) at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC). Leads the development, implementation, and oversight of the Contractor's Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Plan (SHEMP), ensuring compliance with NASA, FAA, OSHA, EPA, and applicable AS9100/9110 requirements.

This position provides functional EHS leadership across site operations and promotes a proactive safety culture focused on personnel safety, regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and mission readiness.

Essential Duties
  • Lead implementation and ongoing management of the site SHEMP and associated EHS programs.
  • Ensure compliance with NASA, OSHA, EPA, FAA, and applicable federal, state, and local EHS requirements.
  • Oversee programs including lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, PPE, hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, emergency preparedness, and environmental compliance.
  • Conduct and oversee workplace inspections, risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and corrective actions.
  • Lead or support investigations of incidents, near misses, safety concerns, and aircraft-related mishaps.
  • Maintain environmental compliance programs related to hazardous waste, spill response, pollution prevention, recycling, and SDS requirements.
  • Coordinate with operational leadership to ensure EHS requirements are incorporated into aircraft maintenance, modification, inspection, and other site activities.
  • Support safety training, emergency exercises, toolbox talks, and workforce safety awareness initiatives.
  • Track EHS performance metrics, trends, and corrective actions and provide reporting and recommendations to Program and Government leadership.
  • Support NASA, OSHA, AS9100/9110, and other internal or external audits and inspections.
  • Provide EHS guidance for new projects, equipment, processes, and operational changes.
  • Serve as the primary EHS liaison with NASA AFRC Safety, Program Management, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement and proactive risk reduction across AOS operations.
Leadership Responsibilities

This position has no direct reports but serves as the senior EHS subject-matter expert for AOS operations. Provides functional leadership, technical guidance, and EHS oversight to employees, subcontractors, and site personnel. Works closely with the AOS Site Lead, Maintenance, Quality, Training, Program Management, and Government stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NASA, and applicable aerospace safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of AS9100/9110, ISO 14001, and occupational health and environmental management principles.
  • Strong background in risk assessment, hazard analysis, incident investigation, corrective action, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead EHS programs within aerospace, aviation maintenance, manufacturing, DoD, or other highly regulated operations.
  • Ability to independently manage complex EHS issues and provide recommendations to senior leadership and Government customers.
  • Strong communication, analytical, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present EHS metrics, reports, and briefings to management and Government stakeholders.
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field. Equivalent military, technical, or directly relevant professional experience may be considered.

Experience: Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible EHS experience, including at least 3 years supporting aerospace, aviation, manufacturing, maintenance, or similarly complex operations.

Senior-level candidates with 10+ years of EHS experience and demonstrated leadership of complex safety programs are highly desired. NASA, DoD, flight operations, or aircraft maintenance/modification experience is preferred.

Security: Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain required security credentials/clearance.

Other: Must successfully complete required pre-employment screening and be available to support after-hours incidents or emergencies when required.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour
  • ISO 14001/45001 Internal Auditor or equivalent
Working Environment

Work is performed in an active aerospace environment and may include offices, hangars, maintenance facilities, flight-line areas, and other industrial workspaces. The position requires adaptability to changing operational priorities and may require occasional overtime or after-hours emergency response.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000 annually

Compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, education, certifications, technical expertise, and demonstrated leadership. Candidates with extensive NASA, aerospace, aviation, or highly regulated EHS leadership experience may be considered toward the upper end of the range.
