Primary Function

Maintain, service, and certify aircrew egress systems across NASA's fleet, with secondary responsibility for lifesupport equipment. Execute safe handling, configuration control, and documentation for components that enable rapid, reliable aircrew escape (ejection seats, canopies, hatches, CAD/PAD), ensuring strict compliance with explosive safety, quality, and maintenance standards and with Center processes (e.g., NAMIS records, Work Orders, QA stamp practices).

Essential Duties
  • Inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, modifies, packs and adjusts life sustaining aircrew equipment not limited to but including: flight helmets, oxygen masks, parachutes, flotation devices, survival kits, and aircrew night-vision goggles. Anti-G garments, explosives, ejection seats, canopies, hatches, oxygen systems and Full Pressure Suits. Repairs flotation equipment, escape slides and various parachutes. Evaluates problems and determines feasibility of repair or replacement related to inspecting floatation equipment and parachutes. Evaluates work orders for fabrication and repair.
  • Installs and removes aircraft life support equipment. Uses various types of test equipment such as altimeters, oxygen testers, leakage testers, radio testers, and other types of testers to conduct reliability testing on equipment.
  • Tracks, monitors, updates equipment inspection records, item manufacturer details, and serviceability status of equipment issued to aircrew or prepositioned on aircraft. Forecasts supply and manage stock levels for component replacement requirements. Maintains inspection and accountability documentation on egress/ life support equipment issued to aircrews and installed on aircraft using NAMIS and numerous other tracking methods.
  • Operates, maintains, and inspects shop machinery, test equipment, and tools. Performs operator maintenance and service inspections on shop equipment. Stores, handles, uses, and disposes of hazardous waste and materials based on environmental standards.
  • Use NASA's automated maintenance data system (NAMIS) tomaintainequipment records, and document maintenance actions for all repairs to NASA assignedaircraft.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalentrequired.
  • At least 4 years technical experience with at least 2 of those 4 years performing engineering technician duties (sustaining aircrew equipment, testing of Full Pressure Suits, working with aircraft egress systems) directly relevant to assigned tasks.
  • Must have completed a basic military (or commercial equivalent) aircrew life support or aircrew flight equipment; or ejection systems specialist course; or specialist manufacturer's training completion certificate.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a FAA Airframe license; or a FAA senior parachute rigger license with in 1 year of hire date.
  • Individual must have the communication skills required to interface and coordinate with the Operations engineers and other technically qualified personnel
  • Must be capable of performing physical labor including, walking, standing, lift up to 40 lbs., pulling, climbing up and down aircraft ladders and agility/dexterity to perform duties assigned.
Working Environment

A fast paced multi-tasking customer service oriented environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. Adaptability regarding schedule and task changes is necessary to accommodate changing priorities. Overtime may be required.

The pay rate for this position is $50.57 per hour
