Job summary

Sequoia Ecological Consulting, Inc. seeks a Project Biologist to lead environmental permitting and biological reporting across California from our Walnut Creek office.

You will manage moderately complex projects, supervise 2–4 staff, coordinate with clients weekly, and travel within the Sacramento Bay Area region. The role emphasizes field surveys, regulatory analyses, and report preparation for CEQA and related permits, with opportunities to mentor junior staff and contribute to business

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field required.
  • Minimum 6 years of full-time wildlife fieldwork, technical report and permit writing experience; at least 4 years in California.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead for survey and reporting programs.
  • Interpret complex compliance packages, permits and project scopes for field compliance.
  • Prepare complex biological resources reports and habitat restoration plans for moderately complex projects.
  • Manage field mapping of biological resources for large/complex projects.
  • Write Biological Constraints Analyses with clear reasoning on impacts and avoidance measures.
  • Assess development constraints under applicable laws protecting biological resources.
  • Produce documents free of technical and grammatical errors.
  • Interact with clients on a weekly basis.
  • Lead author for permit applications (e.g., CDFW LSAA, USFWS Section 7) to support CEQA.
  • Perform protocol-level or focused surveys for sensitive species.
  • Develop cost estimates and scopes of work for complex projects under supervision.
  • Assist with marketing proposals and attend site walk-downs.
