Job summary

Weyerhaeuser is seeking an Environmental Manager for our Plymouth, NC operation. You will lead all environmental work, ensure compliance with federal/state permits, and drive best practices to improve unit performance. The role partners with operations leadership and reports to the Regional Environmental Manager.

You will manage audits, training, and regulatory relationships, while supporting capital projects and ensuring timely environmental records and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a scientific or engineering field or equivalent with 3–5 years of experience; or an associate degree with 3+ years of environmental experience.
  • Strong understanding of environmental requirements and permits across air, water, and waste.
  • Ability to develop regulatory expertise in spill prevention and stormwater management.
  • Understanding of compliance management systems and audit/inspection processes.
  • Project management skills to implement environmental processes.
  • Experience training on environmental policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Able to lead teams with a proactive, urgent mindset.

Overview

Weyerhaeuser has an immediate opening for an Environmental Manager supporting the Plymouth, NC operation. The Facility Environmental Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the operation’s environmental work, implementing systems to operate in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations and permit conditions, championing best practices to achieve customer satisfaction, maintaining all environmental operating plans and records, and driving best practices to improve unit performance. This position partners with the operations’ leadership team to establish and model behavior that leads to excellent performance and reports to the Regional Environmental Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Work safely, in full compliance with the facility safety procedures, policies and practices.
  • Role model all standards and processes and on‑the‑job behavior by living our core principles of safety, integrity, sustainability and citizenship.
  • Be accountable for compliance with environmental regulations and permit conditions on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that inspections and record‑keeping are performed at required frequencies, and that environmental monitoring parameters are in accordance with permits, plans, government regulations, or other regulatory or company requirements.
  • Build rapport with regulatory agencies concerning environmental compliance and work with them to influence regulatory outcomes.
  • Develop relationships with production leaders, managers, supervisors and associates to influence environmental best practices.
  • Ensure proper and timely implementation of facility environmental plans and procedures.
  • Resolve environmental upsets with the facility manager and leaders, regional environmental manager, appropriate regulatory agencies and other appropriate company environmental contacts.
  • Support and/or lead facility environmental compliance audits.
  • Maintain environmental records at the facilities for mandatory retention periods or as determined appropriate.
  • Manage environmental training for all employees as required.
  • Participate as an active member of the operations’ lead teams to support unit and business goals and objectives and model organizational behavior.
  • Participate as an active member of the regional environmental team to support environmental efforts, train on new or changing regulatory matters, and share best management practices.
  • Oversee consultants ensuring quality, cost‑effective service.
  • Support Capital Projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution in a scientific or engineering field or equivalent with 3–5 years of experience, including 2 years of environmental experience; or an associate degree combined with general work experience and at least 3 years of environmental experience.
  • Strong understanding of applicable environmental requirements and permits, including air, water and solid waste, storm water, spill prevention and control, hazardous materials and chemical management.
  • Ability to develop best‑in‑class expertise in the regulatory areas facilities are most exposed to, such as spill prevention and stormwater management.
  • Understands compliance management systems.
  • Comprehends the environmental compliance audit/inspection process and ability to complete an internal or external audit or inspection.
  • Project management skills to develop and implement environmental processes.
  • Proven skills in administering, managing and training on environmental policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong, engaging, people‑centered leadership style.
  • Proactive, assertive and able to work with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and commitment to organize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead and promote teamwork, and efficiently plan work schedule.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in MS Office and other Windows‑based programs.
  • Willingness to support 24/7 operating environments, which may include weekend and holiday support as conditions require.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of working in an industrial environment, such as climbing stairs and working in extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability and vehicle to drive in the geographic region, and occasional overnight travel.
  • High level of integrity, strong work ethic, good judgment and problem‑solving skills.
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit‑increase program and targets a salary range of $66,700 to $100,100 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, offering a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay.

Retirement: Employees can enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match plus an annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.

Paid Time Off: Eligible employees scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week receive 3 weeks of paid vacation during the first year. After six months of employment, eligible employees accrue additional vacation. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, totaling 88 holiday hours.
