Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Alabama is seeking a Laboratory Technician to collect mill samples and perform a range of lab tests, including BOD, pH, TSS, fiber loss, moisture analysis, and more. You will maintain logs, enter data, and participate in ISO training and environmental compliance.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, basic math and computer skills, and the ability to work in a hot, dusty paper mill environment. Some weekend/holiday flexibility is required.

Qualifications

• Must read, understand and follow detailed laboratory procedures.
• Must be able to perform simple calculations.
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

Responsibilities

• Day-to-day collection of mill samples.
• Set up and perform lab tests (e.g., BOD, pH, TSS, fiber loss, moisture).
• Maintain logs and records for tests.
• Enter lab data and generate reports.
• Participate in ISO training/audit processes.
• Handle regulatory NPDES and drinking water sampling and analysis.
• Maintain lab equipment and order lab supplies.
• Maintain and update laboratory SOPs.
• Promote and participate in the safety program.
• Ensure laboratory work meets customer expectations.
• Work to improve equipment and processes in the lab.
• Follow environmental policies of SWR, Alabama and Federal laws.
