Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a lab technician to manage daily mill sampling and a broad range of standard lab tests. You will maintain logs, enter data, and generate reports while upholding safety and environmental policies. The role requires basic math, familiarity with Excel/Word, and the ability to work in a paper mill environment with weekend availability.

You will also support ISO training and audits, maintain equipment, and help improve lab processes and SOPs to meet customer expectations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow lab procedures.
• Ability to perform basic calculations.
• Basic computer skills including Excel and Word.
• Operate in a paper mill environment with lifting, walking, climbing; tolerate heat, humidity, and dust.
• Must have a driver’s license.
• Effective communication with others; available outside normal hours; weekends required.
• Preferred: college degree or 2 years lab experience; pulp and paper/manufacturing experience; familiarity with lab systems, tools, or methodologies; leadership/continuous improvement experience.

Responsibilities

• Collect mill samples daily and perform lab tests per procedures.
• Set up and run tests (BOD, pH, TSS, fiber loss, moisture) as required.
• Maintain necessary logbooks, records, and enter data; generate reports.
• Maintain and order lab supplies and ensure tool readiness.
• Participate in ISO training and audit processes.
• Ensure compliance with environmental policies and safety programs.
• Strive to improve lab equipment and processes.
• Support regulatory sampling and analysis as needed.
