Job summary

State Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny, IA is seeking an Environmental Lab Analyst within the Limnology Section of the Environmental Health Division. The role focuses on whole effluent toxicity testing and inorganic chemical analysis, including conductivity, hardness, alkalinity, and residual chlorine.

Work schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm with occasional weekend work. On-site location in Ankeny, IA, with in-person modality. Questions may be directed to VPR Talent at uiowa.edu.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field with equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and strong record-keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Perform whole effluent toxicity testing and inorganic chemical analyses using approved methods.
  • Maintain cultures of Pimephales promelas and Ceriodaphnia dubia for toxicity testing.
  • Conduct conductivity, total hardness, total alkalinity, and total residual chlorine analyses.
  • Follow EPA methods and State of Iowa guidelines for analyses and reporting.

Job description

The State Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny, IA is looking for an Environmental Lab Analyst, within the Limnology Section of the Environmental Health Division. The primary responsibility of this position is to perform whole effluent toxicity testing and inorganic chemical analysis. This position will follow approved methods to perform specific conductivity, total hardness, total alkalinity, total residual chlorine, and other analyses. This position will also maintain cultures of Pimephales promelas and Ceriodaphnia dubia for whole effluent toxicity testing and perform whole effluent toxicity testing following EPA methods and State of Iowa guidelines.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm. Occasional weekend work possible.

Work Location: Ankeny, IA

Work Modality: In-Person, on-site.

Pay Grade: 3A

Qualifications
Education or Equivalency Required

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record keeping.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, using varied tools and techniques to transmit, receive, and interpret information, both written and verbally.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner and utilize existing resources and learn to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals and needs.
  • Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
Highly Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrate six months to one year of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and experience using and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.
  • Basic environmental lab testing experience (e.g., water or other environmental testing) in high throughput lab setting.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Basic familiarity with state and federal environmental testing regulations.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
