Job summary

Florida Department of Health seeks an Environmental Specialist I to review water well construction applications, coordinate permits, and perform field inspections across Brevard County. The role requires travel, weather resilience, and strong knowledge of environmental health regulations.

The incumbent will engage with property owners, engineers, and officials, contribute to staff training, and participate in public education efforts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science.
• Ability to travel to various locations in Brevard County up to 100+ miles a day.
• Proficiency with computers and office software.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and approves water well construction applications.
• Coordinates the permitting of new and existing Limited Use Wells.
• Conducts site inspections of public swimming pools, limited use wells, and all wells under the program.
• Performs well surveys and sampling under regulatory guidelines.
• Meets with property owners, engineers, attorneys, and developers to resolve environmental concerns.
• Assists in staff training in all areas of the Water Program.
• Participates in public education and outreach.
• Attends trainings to stay current on environmental health regulations.
• Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints.
• Protects Public Health.
