Job summary

The Georgia Department of Public Health in Lincolnton, GA is hiring an Environmental Health Specialist I, II, or III. You will perform inspections of food service establishments, public pools, and wastewater systems, and enforce health laws to protect residents.

Under limited supervision, you’ll investigate complaints, provide technical assistance, and help implement county programs to safeguard Georgian communities. A qualifying degree and experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 40 quarter hours (27 semester hours) in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics).
• One year of professional level environmental health experience required for EHS II/III progression.
• Preferred: Master’s degree; current REHS/RS certification or NEHA equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Perform environmental health inspections for the Public Health Department and recommend enforcement actions as needed.
• Investigate complaints and provide environmental health education and technical assistance to the public and regulated community.
• Coordinate with county/state agencies to implement programs for compliance, monitoring, and corrective action.

Education

Bachelor’s degree with laboratory sciences coursework (40 quarter hours in lab sciences)

Masters degree and/or professional registrations (preferred: REHS/RS)

Under limited supervision, performs environmental health inspections for the Public Health Department and recommends enforcement actions as needed. Investigates complaints and provides environmental health education and technical assistance to the general public, regulated community and officials. Assists in the implementation of countywide programs for compliance, monitoring, enforcement, and corrective action in conjunction with environmental health laws, rules and regulations. May serve as compliance officer and liaison between Public Health agencies and facilities, municipalities, institutions, organizations and county and state agencies. Interprets Local, State, and Federal environmental health laws and regulations. Primary duties include permitting and inspection of food service establishments, tourist accommodations, public swimming pools, on-site wastewater management systems and the carrying out of the rabies control program.

All East Central Health District 6 employees are deemed essential workers in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event including but not limited to: staffing a shelter, working at a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or working at a Point of Dispensing site (POD). If you are called on to participate, you are required to report to the designated site as a condition of employment, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.

Environmental Health Specialist I:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year college or university which included the completion of 40 quarter hours (or 27 semester hours) in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.).

Environmental Health Specialist II:

With above qualifications must have one year of full-time professional level environmental health experience equivalent to an Environmental Health Specialist I

Environmental Health Specialist III:

With above qualifications must have one year of experience equivalent to an EHS II

In addition to the above qualifications, the following are

preferred:

• Completion of a major in environmental health science.
• Completion of a Masters degree. Current registration
• as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
• or
• Registered Sanitarian (RS) by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), or the recognized credentialing board of a sate or country having equivalent standards as NEHA. Currently qualified as a Standardized Retail Food Inspection Officer.

MAPEP

• Category 2: Active:

Involves moderate to heavy physical activity, potentially dangerous equipment operation, and/or exposure to unusual working conditions like weather extremes or chemicals. Examples include warehouse clerks, trades technicians, and mechanics.
